It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Arthur Cunningham, affectionately known as JAC, who left us peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. Born on February 25, 1944, JAC lived a full and vibrant life, marked by his unwavering love for family and his dedication to his career.

JAC was married to his beloved wife, Elena Cunningham, for 59 years. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Steve Cunningham (Michelle), Scott Cunningham (Tracy), and Debbie Coates (Jason). JAC took immense pride in being a father and a grandfather, and he cherished his nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy and happiness.

For 42 years, JAC dedicated his professional life to United Airlines. His love of aviation came from serving 4 years in the United States Air Force, where his passion for travel blossomed. His love for exploring new places was only rivaled by his deep affection for Italy, the homeland of his beautiful bride, Elena. Together, they traveled, creating countless cherished memories along the way.

JAC was also an avid reader, finding solace and adventure within the pages of his favorite books. His inquisitive mind and love for learning inspired those around him.

JAC’s warm spirit, kindness, and sense of humor will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable moments.

A celebration of JAC's life will be held at a later date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at Alz.org or SIU Aviation Scholarship at Support Aviation | School of Aviation | SIU in his memory.
