Obituary

John Albert Franks went home to the Lord on July 1, 2025, peacefully surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with melanoma. He was 87 years old.

John was born in Paxton, Illinois, and in 1948, he moved to Rockford, IL, where he poured his heart into raising his family. He graduated from Harlem High School in Loves Park in 1956, a proud and accomplished young man standing out not only as the #1-ranked golfer on his high school team but also as the first chair violinist in the orchestra. His passion and talent extended beyond the classroom, as he also contributed his musical gifts to the Rockford Symphony Traveling Orchestra, embodying a spirit of dedication and artistry.

In 1958, John followed his heart and eloped with the love of his life, Sharryn Helm. Their marriage blossomed over decades, deepened by laughter, devotion, and unbreakable family bonds that he cherished dearly.

John's professional journey began at Atwood Machine Company as a tool and die apprentice, where his eye for precision and innovation flourished. Later, he worked tirelessly in the engineering department, always driven by a desire to create and improve. In 1969, his talents caught the eye of Modern Metals Products, where he served as Vice President and General Manager until his retirement in 2000. His ingenuity shone brightly in 1993 when he was awarded a U.S. patent for a groundbreaking automotive part he designed, an inspiring testament to his creative mind and relentless pursuit of excellence.

Golf was more than a sport to John; it was a lifelong passion. Starting as a caddie at Forest Hills Country Club during high school, he kept that love alive through the years at Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Golf Club in Rockford. His serenity and joy found a perfect outlet in gardening—crafting peaceful retreats with ponds and waterfalls he personally designed and built, pouring his heart into each tranquil sanctuary. Another great joy was cooking, especially for his large, loving family. He eagerly participated in Rockford's "One Hundred Men Who Cook", sharing his culinary talents and warm hospitality. John's spontaneous road trips with loved ones, his appreciation for beauty, and his zest for life all reflected a man truly vibrant and full of passion.

A man rooted in faith and proud of his Swedish heritage, John was a member of the Lyran Society in Rockford. Later, in Leesburg, Florida, he and Sharryn found a new home at St. Mark Lutheran Church, where his faith and love continued to flourish.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Sharryn, and their four children: Dean Franks (Shirley), Lynne Roszkowski (Dan), Lauri Brolund (Karl), Lisa Jimenez (Mark); his grandchildren: Brad Franks, Brittany Buhl, Bradey Franks, Alex Roszkowski, Anna Roszkowski-Molck, Anjulia Jimenez-Muller, Ryan Brolund, Ellie Ostrander; and great-grandchildren: Austin Hackworth, Hunter Buhl, Gunner Buhl, Lucy Franks, Adelyn Molck, Benjamin Muller.

A service will be held on August 4, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, located at 28215 US Highway 27, Leesburg, FL 34748. Additionally, a celebration of life is being arranged in Rockford, IL. The date will be announced at a later time.

He leaves behind a legacy filled with love, strength, joy, and an unwavering devotion to family. His spirit touched everyone he knew, and he will be profoundly missed.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Cornerstone Hospice for their compassionate care and unwavering support during John's final days.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." Matthew 25:21
