IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jack
Coutts
June 25, 1954 – January 30, 2026
John “Jack” Thomas Coutts, 71, passed away after a brief illness on January 30 in The Villages, Florida, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on June 25, 1954, in New Haven, Connecticut, Jack was raised in Hamden, CT, where he developed the values that guided him throughout his life—hard work, loyalty, and devotion to family. He graduated from Hamden High School, where he was an All-County varsity hockey player, and continued to play at the University of New Haven. He also spent many years coaching in the Southern CT Youth Hockey League.
Jack spent his career in the restaurant industry, a field that perfectly suited his work ethic and people-first nature. Over the years, he built a successful career that ultimately led to owning several restaurants, including New Deal Steakplace in Old Saybrook and, more recently, Marco Pizzeria in Branford. He took great pride in his work and was well known for his dedication, leadership, and ability to connect with those around him.
Outside of work, Jack was defined by his passions. He was an avid hockey fan and a lifelong runner whose discipline and determination were nothing short of remarkable. Jack completed twelve New York City Marathons and six Boston Marathons, achieving a personal best time of 2:58. He was a proud member of the Milford Road Runners and The Villages Running Club, communities that reflected both his competitive spirit and his love of camaraderie.
Above all else, Jack’s greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather whose presence was steady, supportive, and full of heart.
Jack was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Evelyn Coutts, and his sister, Nancy Coutts Katz (Mike). He is survived by his beloved wife, Jane M. Coutts (née Kennedy); his beloved children, John Coutts (Laura) of Tolland, CT, and Jamie Coutts Anti (Nick) of Cohasset, MA; and his cherished grandchildren, Sadie and Charlie Coutts, and J.D. Anti. He is also survived by his siblings, Robert Coutts (Madi), David Coutts (Judi), and Susan Hanley (Jon), along with many extended family members and friends who will miss his warmth, determination, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
Jack spent his retirement living in The Villages, where he worked at Fleet Feet The Villages and enjoyed golfing, playing guitar with the Guitar Club of Southern Oaks, and participating in several clubs.
Private services will be held at a later date. Donations in Jack’s memory may be sent to Cornerstone Hospice Foundation (email: Give@cornerstonehospicefoundation.org), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of your choice.
