Obituary

Dr. John N. Mehanna, born November 22, 1941, in Hrajel, Lebanon, passed away on April 26, 2024, at the age of 82.

He first came to the United States in 1966 following medical school to fulfill residencies in Chicago and New York City.

He met his late wife, Renate, in New York City in 1970.  John and Renate Mehanna later moved their family to Cumberland, MD, then to Charlottesville, VA for a short time before retiring in The Villages, FL.

John grew up in Hrajel, Lebanon but spent his childhood years in Jounieh, Lebanon during the winter months which allowed him to go to school.  John was the first person from his village to get his French baccalaureate and then continue studying at the University.  He graduated from St. Joseph's University, school of medicine, Beirut, Lebanon on June 27, 1966, and practiced medicine for over 50 years.  Most of his time practicing medicine was in Cumberland, MD at Sacred Heart Hospital/Western Maryland Health System (WMHS) where he specialized in internal medicine, more specifically oncology/hematology.  He was nominated WMHS physician of the year in 2005.

John, called "Papa" by his family, loved spending time with his entire family.  He enjoyed talking about history, current events, and golf.  He was a lifelong learner who dedicated his life to helping others.

He is survived by children Lara Mehanna (Jimmy) Jersey City, NJ; Vanessa Ward (Von) Ruckersville, VA; Tanya Sturtz (John) Keene, NH; Maya Mehanna (Albert) St. Augustine, FL; John R. Mehanna Orlando, FL; grandchildren Lukas, Jackson, Kameron, Sullivan, Mariam, Kyle, and Matthew.  John was preceded in death by his wife, Renate Mehanna, his brother George Mehanna, his sister Yvonne Frangi, and his parents Elisabeth Abu-fahd and Najib Mehanna.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, MD on Saturday June 29, 2024, from 12pm to 2pm with a memorial service with Deacon Jim Rose officiating to follow at 2pm.
