Obituary

John Richard Scott passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026, at the age of 90. He was born on June 7, 1935, in Pontiac, Michigan to Nell Phillips and William C. Scott. He raised his family in Petoskey, Michigan, where he built a life centered on family, service, faith, and a passion for teaching others. In his later years, he made his home in The Villages, Florida.

On August 13, 1955, John married the love of his life, Beverly Jean (Street) Scott. Together they shared an extraordinary 70 years of marriage, building a life rich in love, laughter, and family. John was a devoted husband, a proud father, and, as many would say, the “best Pop ever.” He was known for putting others first, always making space for those he loved, and creating a home where everyone felt welcomed.

John found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. He loved golfing—celebrating a memorable hole-in-one—boating, hunting, fishing, traveling, taking pride in raising the American flag each day, and most of all, spending time with family and friends. Known for his warm spirit, he was a thoughtful and respectful man and a gifted teacher who led by example. He also had a playful side—a consummate prankster whose sense of humor brought laughter to those around him.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Alma College and a Master’s degree from Central Michigan University, later continuing his studies toward a Doctorate in Education. John spent ten years working in the family business, DSI/Adistra Corporation, in both Plymouth, Michigan, and California. He then moved his family to Petoskey, drawn by his love of northern Michigan, and pursued his love of education through a 25-year career as a teacher and administrator in the Petoskey school system, reflecting his deep commitment to helping others grow and succeed. In retirement, he remained involved in the family business.

A man of deep community involvement, John was active in the Kiwanis Club, served as a lay reader and vestry member at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Petoskey, gave his time as a 4-H Club leader and helped start the Little Traverse Wheelway in Emmet County. He believed in showing up, helping out, and making a difference wherever he could.

John was preceded in death by his sister Shirley McKeon (James); his brother Phillip (Sandra); and sisters-in-law Dorothy (Joseph) and Todd (Frank). He is also lovingly remembered by many surviving nieces, nephews, and extended family members, including his sister-in-law Kathleen and brother-in-law John (Karen).

He is survived by his wife, Beverly and five children: John (Becky) of Onekama, Michigan; Paul (Erika) of Camarillo, California; Jeannie Meyer (Peter) of Osterville, Massachusetts; Katherine Schorfhaar of The Villages, Florida; and David of Ithaca, Michigan. He was a cherished grandfather to 11 grandchildren: Katherine (David), Megan (Michael), Chad (Jennifer), Andrew (Tobin), Trey, Michael (Lexi), Caroline (Evan), Elizabeth (Tyler), Matthew, Eric (Jamie), and Skip; and he was blessed with 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy.

In his final days, John could often be heard whistling familiar tunes, including “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.” His favorite song, “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” reflected the way he lived his life—with kindness, humility, and a quiet hope for the world. John’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so freely.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness in John’s memory—help someone in need, be kind to another, be ready to lend a hand, or simply make sure you always have a full tank of gas.
