Sandy Phillips

John Jeffery Phillips passed away on September 22, 2023. He was born to Frank and Evelyn
Phillips on November 17, 1945, in Highland, Illinois, and was raised in Greenville, Illinois. He
attended elementary school through college in Greenville and received a Bachelor of Science in
Education from Greenville College. He taught business courses and retired after twenty three
years from Breese Central High School where he also coached football, golf, boys' basketball
and girls' softball. John also coached football at Greenville College. John served his country in
the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War for four years.
Sandra Jo Phillips passed away on April 4, 2023. She was born Sandra Jo Schrumpf on August
19, 1945, to John and Katy Schrumpf in Tupelo, Mississippi. When her family moved back to
Bond County Sandy attended Pocahontas Elementary. She then attended junior high and high
school in Greenville where John and Sandy met in the seventh grade. They were high school
sweethearts, both graduating from Greenville High School in 1963. Sandy received her
Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Greenville College, and John and Sandy were
married in September of 1968 at the First Christian Church, Greenville, Illinois. She taught for
twenty three years at Breese Central High School in Breese, Illinois. Sandy taught English and
coached girls' volleyball and girls' basketball.
John and Sandy were members of the First Christian Church in Greenville. They are survived
by their son, Darrin Edward Phillips, and his fiancé, Karen Johnson, and are also survived by
many nieces and nephews and many former students, coworkers, and friends.
Upon retirement John and Sandy found they enjoyed being snowbirds to Florida and eventually
moved to The Villages becoming full time residents where they enjoyed golfing and playing
pickleball. John made two holes in one, one at Greenville Country Club and one at The
Villages. Sandy had two holes in one at The Villages golf courses. Both John and Sandy
served others by helping with Habitat for Humanity projects and various other fundraisers.
John and Sandy's Greenville High School classmates have established a memorial with the unit
Academic Foundation for current local teachers who wish to advance their education. All those
who wish to participate may send a check to the Academic Foundation, 1008 N. Hena
Greenville, Illinois, 62246. Be sure to write on the check that your contribution is for the John
