Obituary

John Alexander Schmidt, 80, of Port Orange, Florida, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at home surrounded by his family. John was born on March 2, 1943, in Port Huron, Michigan and was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred (Green) Schmidt and Father, Alexander Schmidt.  He was the devoted husband of over 60 years to Barbara (McCarty) Schmidt and a wonderful father to children Angela (Schmidt) and late Gregory Smith in Apopka, FL, Jon (Shari) Schmidt in Tucson, AZ, and Carolanne (Schmidt) Anselmo in New Smyrna Beach, FL. He was a dearly loved grandfather "Papa" to Taylor Smith, Austin Smith, Joey Anselmo, Sunny Anselmo, Erik Schmidt, and Emilie Schmidt. He also is survived by his brother William (Susan) Schmidt, sister Dianne (Richard) Williams, and sister Ellen (late Robert) Harris along with several nieces and nephews. John is preceded in death by his older brother James Schmidt and recently his youngest brother Paul Schmidt.

John was the kindest, dearest, and most gentle man who will be missed greatly by all who knew him.  Before and after retirement, he mostly enjoyed being outside golfing, boating, traveling, volunteering for historical building restoration, mainly a military battery McIntosh on the State of Florida State Park, Egmont Key with over 10,000 hours of serviced volunteer hours, caring and feeding of local colony (stray & homeless) cats, spending time with his grandchildren, and of course taking his beloved dogs for walks.

A Celebration of life for family and friends will be held Saturday, March 2, 2024 (his 81st birthday), at his Port Orange, FL home.  Messages can be left on www.baldwincremation.com .  In lieu of flowers please make donations to "Papa & Mimi's Paws for a Cause" on the GoFundMe Link: https://gofund.me/8d710eb8
