Johnie Michael Whitten, age 79, passed peacefully at his home in Ft Myers, Florida, on July 2, 2026, surrounded by his wife and children. Mike is survived by his wife, Ellen Whitten of 32 years, of Ft Myers, Florida; his daughter, Shelley Townsend; his son Wes Whitten (Melanie); stepdaughters; Stacey Adams (Russell) and Emily Price (Shep). He leaves behind grandchildren Courtney (Josh) Sutton, Watson Adams, Aubrie Townsend, Willa Adams, Rylie Townsend, Oliver Price and Adeline Price. His great grandchildren; Whitten Sutton, Scotland Sutton and Thea Sutton.
Mike was born on January 27, 1947, in Selmer, Tennessee to parents Myra Jo and John Hollis Whitten. He graduated from Chester County High School and attended the University of Tennessee in Memphis and served honorably in the National Guard. He enjoyed a distinguished career of over 30 years, as a telecommunications engineer, where he was known for his technical expertise, innovative problem-solving and leadership in resolving complex challenges. Mike’s professionalism and dedication left a lasting impression on colleagues and all who worked with him.
Mike’s Christian faith was the cornerstone of his life and foundation for his family. A faithful steward of the gifts God entrusted to him, he devoted himself to serving his church community with compassion and generosity throughout his lifetime. He lived his faith not only through his service to others but also through the love, guidance and unwavering support he gave to his family. His example of integrity, kindness and steadfast faith leaves a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
In retirement, Mike and Ellen have lived in the Heritage Palms Community in Ft Myers, Florida, for over 20 years. Mike enjoyed playing golf, spending time with friends and serving as the elected Director of the Community Development District.
In this past year, Mike faced a challenging diagnosis of a rare, aggressive form of cancer, mucosal melanoma. He faced this challenge with dignity, strength, and unwavering faith. He is now at peace, free of pain and walking with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Mike will be greatly missed by his many friends and extended family.
