Obituary

Julia Ray Baker, born on October 10, 1941, in Mobile, Alabama, passed away on March 21, 2026 in The Villages, Florida. She was the beloved daughter of Raymond and Christine Welsh and the devoted sister of James Welsh, all of whom preceded her in death.

She grew up in Mobile and carried the values of her upbringing of faith, humility, and perseverance through every chapter of her life. A gifted student and lifelong learner, she earned her Bachelor of Arts from Judson College and later her Master of Arts from Mississippi Southern University.

Her calling was education, and she poured her heart into it. She served as a High School English and French teacher and later as a Community College Professor of English Composition, shaping countless students with her love of language, literature, and learning. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom; she was known for her patience, her encouragement, and her belief in the potential of every student she taught.

She was blessed to share her life with two loving partners: her first husband, Mickey King, who passed away in 2002, and later with Dr. Joel Baker, who passed away in 2012.

She was a devoted mother to Marcus King and to Byron King, who preceded her in death. She was a loving grandmother to Jordan, Claire, and Willow, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride.

Throughout her life, she lived in Jacksonville, Florida; Brookhaven, Mississippi; and The Villages, Florida, forming deep connections in each community. She was an active member of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church in Jacksonville and later New Life Christian Church in The Villages, where her faith continued to guide her.

Her passions were simple and sincere—reading, gardening, and home crafts—quiet pursuits that reflected her gentle spirit. She was devoted to Christ, her family, and to the work of shaping minds and hearts. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, educator, and woman of steadfast faith.

A memorial service will be held at New Life Christian Fellowship in The Villages on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. (4701 E County Rd 462, Wildwood, FL 34785). A graveside service, led by BJ Hutto of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church, will follow the next week at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. (4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207).

She will be deeply missed, and her legacy will continue in the lives she touched with grace, kindness, and unwavering love.
