Obituary

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend.

We announce the passing of Julianne Irene (nee Gibbs) Smith, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and cherished friend, who left us at the age of 81 on October 2, 2024, in Ormond Beach, FL. Julianne was born on March 2, 1943, to Arthur and Jessie Gibbs in Woodford Bridge, Essex, England. She met her future husband, Robert Lee Smith, in 1959, when the Airman First Class and his USAF buddies crashed a wedding at the Marlboro Hotel in Felixstowe, England. They were married in England in 1961 and moved to New Jersey in 1962 with their newborn daughter, Karen. After several moves within New Jersey, they settled in Livingston, NJ in 1973. Julianne worked for Burrelle's Press Clipping Bureau, retiring as Vice President of Customer Service.

In their retirement years, they moved to Ormond Beach, Florida. Julianne was the proud mother of Karen Smith Duffy and Gary Smith (Kailyn) of Ormond Beach. Her legacy continues through her grandson Ryan Duffy (Megan) & great-granddaughter Edith Rose of Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Julianne was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, with whom she shared a loving marriage of 60 years, and her sisters Gwendolyn Cardy and Gloria Gibbs, brother Arthur, and nieces Dawn Spiller and Suzanne Hatchard. She is survived by her nieces Theresa Smith of Linden, NJ, and Susan Tolentino of Weston, FL, and her grandnieces Emma Annells, Leigh Joseph, and Louise Spiller of Wales, UK, as well as grandniece Becky Hatchard of Earls Colne, UK and grandnephew Christopher Hatchard of France. She was a cherished friend of Genevieve and Louis Martino of Ormond Beach.

Julianne loved gardening, cruises to the Caribbean, watching British comedies and mystery programs, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, and playing the Florida Lottery.

A celebration of Julianne's life will be held in November 2024 at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nescopeck, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to World Central Kitchen or the charity of your choice. She will be dearly missed but forever remembered for her sense of humor and unwavering love.
