Obituary

IN LOVING MEMORY of our brilliant and beloved mother and grandmother, Julie Elizabeth Mathis:

Julie E. Mathis (nee Young, 1949-2021) passed away peacefully in hospital care and the presence of family on January 14, 2021, following a short illness.

A woman ahead of her time, she was fiercely independent, an avid reader and lifelong learner. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Business, magna cum laude, which she followed with graduate studies in Economics, primarily focusing on commercial real estate. Prior to retirement, she worked in management and financial analysis of commercial property. She continued learning in her later years in these areas, but enjoyed the sciences the most, having always excelled in mathematics and chemistry. "Books are our friends" is a legacy passed down to all of her grandchildren, along with an appreciation of music, the arts, philosophy and logic. From early in life, she championed peace and women's rights.

Her family and friends will remember her in her youth as a surfer girl who also sailed well, loved the beach and was a fun ball of energy, and in her later years as a trivia champion who enjoyed concerts and trivia competitions with her husband before his passing. Together, they rarely missed a question in over twenty years. She also enjoyed organizing large events for seniors and holidays.

Throughout her life, she helped many charities, but especially the Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity, and Disabled American Veterans, plus various local veteran initiatives. As the wife of the late Jack Mathis (a decorated military officer) and a patriot herself, veteran organizations held a special place in her heart. Having developed elite sewing skills from a hobby, in 2020 she turned those skills to hand sew a large volume of masks for donation to local healthcare workers as well as personally distributing masks provided by the city to senior communities.

With love and admiration, you are deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, her wish was for any desired donations to please be directed to the Humane Society .
