Obituary

Karen Anne Howell – Voyles, 79, was born September 28, 1944 in Hemstead, NY and peacefully passed away on  May 25, 2024 in Orlando, FL.  Karen was the youngest of 9 siblings, with 6 sisters and 2 brothers.  All of her siblings preceded her in death, with her beloved sister, Ruth, passing a mere 7 days beforehand.  Karen's husband, John Walls, passed many years ago.  She is survived by her 4 children and many grandchildren.

Karen was a caretaker to her family members, and a very protective Mama Bear to her children.  Over her lifetime, she lived in several states including New York, Florida, Alaska, Virginia and North Carolina.  Wherever she lived, and wherever she went, she had never met a stranger.  She bonded with people easily, and was one to readily offer a genuine compliment, gifts of services or initiate a chat about the grace of God.

She spent many years in Alaska where she taught her kids how to hunt, fish, grow and can food, and make clothing.   She was very resilient and raised her children to be strong and independent adults.  She loved to dance, and especially enjoyed Elvis Presley music and Elvis tribute artists.  Karen got a lot of pleasure from shopping and clothing.   When she dressed each day, she made sure her outfits always matched from head to toe.

Karen had a soft heart for all animals with her favorite being frogs.  She found these bulging-eyed amphibians fascinating, and was drawn to their vocal chorus on warm, southern nights.   For many years, Karen worked for a pet shop and learned how to groom dogs.  While raising her children, she cared for her horses, pigeons, chickens, dogs, and cats.

Karen was a long-time volunteer at a church called His Laboring Few Ministries in North Carolina.  The organization provided a ministry to the homeless and hurting; to those addicted to drug and alcohol; and to the biker lifestyle.  She found much joy in working as a cook for the church.  Karen was very generous with her time, and also in providing for the needy.  She labored in the kitchen for countless folks and collected clothing and shoes for the needy.

Karen spent her life as a caretaker to so many.  She was one to live life to the fullest.  For her, the thing that mattered most was her love for God and family.  She will be missed.
