Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved son, Keith H. Engel, 51, on May 15, 2026. Keith was born on April 17, 1975 in New York City, to Nancy Merrill-Engel and Michael Engel of Ocala, Florida.

Keith grew up in Manhattan and attended The Birch Wathen Lenox School. He then went to The University of Albany and finally The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Keith had a lifelong love of learning, and as a child, read the entire Britannica and World Book encyclopedias.

At 25, Keith was diagnosed with MS. He never let that stop him from pursuing his dreams. He went skydiving and traveled. He weathered his illness with courage, laughter and determination to live the best life he could no matter what adversity he faced. He never let his illness define him and his zest for life was an inspiration to all that knew him. Keith leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor and a genuine warmth. He was a joy to everyone who knew him and he put everyone at ease with his gentle spirit. He had the kindest heart and an unwavering strength.

Keith never let anything diminish his spirit. His resilience taught us the importance of staying strong. He always looked for the silver lining in the face of adversity and his strength, spirit and teachings got many people through tough times. He was incredibly generous and compassionate even when he was faced with challenges. Keith shared in everyones joys and sorrows and his comforting words were his greatest gift. For everyone who knew him, he gave his best and his generosity was striking. We will all miss just talking to him about anything under the sun. We wish he was still here with us enjoying life. We also understand why God wanted such a beautiful angel.

Keith is survived by his mother Nancy Merrill-Engel, his father Michael Engel, his brother Chris Engel, his partner Renee Wilkinson, their daughter Hazel Wilkinson, his sister Brooke Heinz, her son Hunter Heinz and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Keith was preceded in death by his grandmother Arline Merill, his uncle Jimmy "Buddy" Merrill and his aunt Patti Vitale.

A very special thank you to all the wonderful, generous and amazing health care workers that treated Keith as a friend and not just another patient.

To Paul Hodges and Becky Sutton, for their unconditional love, friendship, encouragement and comfort that they so generously gave to Keith.

And lastly, to his Lyrania community for all their friendship, care and support.

A Celebration of Life will be planned for at a later date.
