Obituary

Kenneth "Ken" Schlaepfer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, veteran, and family comedian, passed away on June 17, 2026, at the age of 86.

Ken was the devoted husband of Joan Schlaepfer (who pre deceased him) and a loving father to Cynthia Binckes, Kevin Binckes, Laurie (John) Montchal, and Joanne Montchal. He was a proud grandfather to Michael (Rachanda) Miano, Eric Alfredson, Desiree Bohne, and Nicholas "Nic" (Deasja) Montchal, great grandchildren Kaiden, Kehlani, and Khori. He is also survived by his sisters, Carol Schlaepfer and Laura Winter, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Ken served his country with honor in both the United States Air Force and the Army National Guard. Following his military service, he built a successful career as a mechanical engineer. With only a high school education, he demonstrated that determination, hard work, and perseverance could overcome any obstacle. Throughout his life, he often worked multiple jobs to ensure his family was cared for and provided every opportunity possible.

As a young man, Ken loved the water. Whether swimming or spending time on his boat, he was happiest near the water. He also cherished family camping trips, creating countless memories around campfires and under the stars. Later in life, he and Joan enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, and they looked forward to meeting Joan's brother, John "Jack" Molinard, in different locations to celebrate New Year's together.

Anyone who knew Ken knew he was quite serious but also loved to laugh. One family memory that will live on forever is the day he attempted to take a family photograph while holding the camera backwards. As the family waited for the picture, all anyone could see was Ken's magnified eye as he repeatedly wondered why he couldn't see everyone through the lens. It became one of those treasured stories that would be retold for years, always bringing laughter.

Ken also affectionately referred to himself as "Tarzan." In his final days, he proved just how fitting that nickname was. His strength, determination, and will to live amazed everyone around him as he fought far beyond expectations. The resilience that defined his final chapter was the same resilience that had defined his entire life.

Ken will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his strong work ethic, his love of adventure, and the countless ways he showed up for the people he loved. Though his absence leaves a tremendous void, his stories, laughter, and spirit will remain with his family forever.

As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that Tarzan has swung on to his next great adventure, leaving behind a legacy of strength, love, and laughter that will never be forgotten.
