Lawrence C. Muschiatti, age 87, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2024, at Avow Hospice, Naples, Florida. Larry lived a very full life. To those who knew him, Larry will be remembered as a good man, a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, athlete, scientist, and a friend to many.
Larry was born on January 9, 1937 in Hamilton Township NJ to parents Renzo and Violet Muschiatti. He graduated from Hamilton High School, graduated from Rutgers University (New Brunswick NJ) where he also completed graduate school and earned his PhD in Chemistry. At Rutgers he played football and baseball. After earning his PhD in Chemistry, Larry accepted a position to work for the DuPont Company at the Experimental Station and moved his family to Delaware in 1966. During his 35 year employment at DuPont he worked in several business units including Elastomers, Wire & Cable, Adhesives, Packaging & Polymer Products. He had many patents and travelled internationally as a Senior Technical Consultant for DuPont.
Larry met his wife Joan at DuPont when they both worked in the Elastomers Department at the Chestnut Run Site in Delaware. Larry was a loving husband to Joan. They got married in 1986 and had 38 wonderful years together. He was a kind, generous and caring man to Joan, his 4 children, his step-daughter, and their 5 grandchildren.
Larry loved his family. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up as they became young adults. He attended many of their soccer, lacrosse, music recitals, baseball, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, track & field and special events. He loved getting all the grandkids together for their annual Summer Camp Ocean Pines family visits, the water parks and beach days in Ocean City MD. He enjoyed taking them on vacations to the Marriott Ocean Pointe on Singer Island FL, to Disney World & to Discovery Cove in Orlando, The Bahamas Carnival Cruise, The Beaches Turks & Caicos vacation and their last Dewey Beach DE family vacation. As everyone got older, Larry enjoyed seeing his family on their many visits to Naples FL.
In addition to his love of science, fixing things, inventing things, developing new ideas and new processes, Larry was also involved in sports and physical fitness his whole life. After college, while working for DuPont, for his daily aerobic exercise, he was a runner and a competitive handball player. Later he played racquetball. As he got older & his knees started to hurt, he swam laps at the YMCA, and then, he became an avid cyclist. He loved cycling and the outdoors. While owning their vacation townhouse in Dewey Beach, DE, in 1987 Larry bought a 20 ft. O'Day, joined the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association and taught himself to sail on the Rehoboth Bay.
After Larry retired from DuPont in 2001, Larry & Joan moved full time to their waterfront home they built in 1992 in Ocean Pines, MD. Larry loved retirement and living by the water. He loved sitting on their dock watching the sun rise over the Isle of Wight Bay and the Ocean City MD skyline. He enjoyed his daily routine of throwing tennis balls into the bay and watching Josh his beloved Chesapeake Bay Retriever swim effortlessly to retrieve them. He cycled daily averaging 35 to 40 miles a day. He did over 20 of the annual October Seagull Century bike rides cycling from Salisbury MD to Ocean City MD. He did the Cycle Oregon's 5-Day 500 Mile Challenge four times. As a Mr. Fix It he could fix almost anything.
Larry enjoyed all types of music from opera to rock & heavy metal. He loved to watch baseball and college sports. He enjoyed theatre & rock concerts. He loved to read. He read most of his novels in Italian so he could keep up his Italian language so he could converse & understand his Italian relatives who live in Archevia and Ancona Italy. He liked to cook and liked to dance. Larry was resourceful and a man of many talents.
During their marriage, Larry enjoyed traveling with Joan. They took skiing vacations to Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge, Alta, and Lake Tahoe. They took Caribbean sailing vacations on the Royal Clipper and Star Clipper sailing ships. He loved the vacation trips to the BVI, Hawaii and Aruba and especially loved their vacations and the several trips they took to Italy including visiting his Italian relatives in Ancona, Archevia, Sermide and Senigallia, Italy, their Odyssey Grand Tour of Italy and their last Royal Clipper Mediterranean sailing vacation from Rome to Venice.
Throughout the stages of Larry's life, he loved the companionship of his dogs, his three Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. After moving full time to Naples FL in 2017 and being without a dog for almost 20 years, in 2019 Larry and Joan adopted a mixed breed 7 year old cattle dog with one-eye that they saw at a Dog Rescue Fair. Larry fell in love with this mild manner dog and named him Enzo. For Enzo's remaining 5 1/2 years, sweet Enzo gave Larry so much joy, love, companionship and comfort especially when Larry could no longer cycle and was limited in his daily activities due to severe lung damage caused from Covid.
Larry was survived by his wife Joan, his sons Jeffrey, David, and Michael (Laura), his daughter Debra Muschiatti Olsen (Curtis), granddaughters Ashley, Kelly & MaKayla Muschiatti, grandsons Brandon & Justin Bowden, his sister Gloria Asterino, his brothers-in-laws Joe (Linda) Brzostowski, John (Laura) Brzostowski & his sisters in-laws, Jean (George) Catanese & Julia (James) Keating, cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
