Lenny Shaffer hung up his work boots on May 2, 2026. Born January 5, 1953, Lenny was a man of strong faith, grit and a "blue-collar" steadfastness that’s hard to find these days. He was the kind of guy who didn't just talk about helping, he showed up and did it.
He was quiet, stern, and stubborn as a mule, but he had a heart for his people. Lenny was a master of his craft who lived life on his own terms. Whether he was building furniture, running fences, or framing out house additions, he could fix or build anything he set his mind to. He wasn't much for "teaching" in the traditional sense; he led by doing, and he honestly expected you to keep up and know what he knew. His hands were rarely still, and you can find his handiwork in homes all over the place. (The family invites you to share memories of the specific items Lenny built for you over the years so we can keep track of everything he left behind).
Lenny’s tastes were as bold as his personality. He had no time for bland food; he wanted heavily seasoned smoked BBQ, seafood straight off the grill, and a cold Rum and Coke. If it wasn't Mom Mom’s cooking or her Iced Tea, it wasn't right. "It doesn't taste like Mom Moms" was his standard line, usually followed by "where is the salt and pepper?" His music was all over the map, from Jimmy Buffett to 80s rock and country. On race days, he was a die-hard Dale Earnhardt fan, and he never wavered on the Philadelphia Phillies. He didn't just watch racing on TV, either—he was in the stands for plenty of NASCAR finishes.
Then there were his vehicles. Lenny had an obsession with red steel. If it was in his driveway, it was red, and he made sure to pass that obsession down to his kids.
He had a soft spot for animals, especially his birds, Bandit and Gabby, who were his babies. He’d feed any creature that wandered into his yard—neighborhood cats, squirrels, and birds, it didn't matter. He even took in a baby raccoon once and built the little guy his own condo off the back porch.
He grew up on the Jersey Shore, but he loved to hit the road to find "the best restaurants." That eventually led him to Daytona Beach, Florida—a place that fit him perfectly. He loved the water, nature, and the open air. He found joy in movement and the world he built for his family, whether he was biking or meticulously tending to his yard. Many weekends were spent on his boat at Disappearing Island. He’d bring a charcoal grill that bolted to the back of the boat and whip up full steaks on skewers with veggies—not just basic burgers and dogs. Being on the water and BBQing were his "thing," and he was damn good at it.
Lenny is survived by his children, Matthew, Melanie, and Michael Shaffer; his sister, Sharon Beningo; and his brother, Chris Shaffer. He made sure the next generation knew the value of a job well done and the importance of driving a red truck. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Michael, Courtney, Haleigh, Olivia, Keegan, Madelyn (Maddie), and Lilliana (Lilly); and his great-grandchildren: Paisley, Everleigh, Avery, Mckenna, and Theodore (Teddy). He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Stella Shaffer.
He was a man of resilience who taught us to pick a path and stick to it. He is irreplaceable, and his legacy lives on in every house he worked on and every red truck on the road.
