IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lorel Eugene
"Gene" Teolis
December 7, 1933 – August 12, 2024
Lorel Eugene "Gene" Teolis, 90, of Maitland, Fla., known by his close friends as "T," passed away unexpectedly on August 12, 2024. Born on December 7, 1933, Gene was the cherished son of Pio and Mary Teolis.
Originally from Roslyn, N.Y., Gene's early years were marked by his dedication to sports and community. He attended Hofstra University, where he excelled in both football and lacrosse. After college, Gene was accepted into the first-ever Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Fla. After completing flight school, he was awarded his wings and was assigned to the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado, California. There, he met his future wife Dorothy on a blind date at the iconic Hotel Del Coronado. Gene went on to serve with distinction as a U.S. Navy pilot, with various aviation roles in the Pacific, including being stationed at U.S. Naval facilities in the Philippines. After four years in the Navy, he retired from service to pursue his soon-to-be bride and a career in the business world.
Gene began his successful career with IBM, starting in sales and ultimately becoming a branch manager at the Orlando office. During his tenure at IBM, he served as a board member and later as board chairman of the Central Florida Fellowship of Christian Athletes. After retiring from IBM, Gene took on the role of Director at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, continuing his commitment to community service. He also pursued his passion for tennis as a pro, instructor, and avid competitor, sharing his love for the sport through lessons and coaching.
Gene was a founding member of King's Chapel Church, where his strong Christian faith and love for his church family were evident through his active involvement.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy "Dottie" Teolis. Gene is survived by his four children: Annette Schelhorn of Lorton, Va., Joy Sexton (Billy) of Tallahassee, Fla., Gene Teolis of Winter Park, Fla., and Laura Lester (Frank) of Winston-Salem, N.C. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Brandon Schelhorn (Barbara), Stephanie Dobranski (Dan), Leslie Carlson (Michael), Wyatt and Taylor Sexton, Dylan Borum, and Lea Lester; and four great-grandchildren: Dustin Dobranski, Quinn and Rowan Carlson, and Michael Mastromonico.
Gene's sudden departure leaves a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who knew him. His legacy of service, passion, and dedication will be remembered with great affection.
A memorial service will be held at Glen Haven Memorial Park on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Central Florida Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
