Marlene K. Gibbs Hornick, 86, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 14, 2026, surrounded by hospice care, her loving daughter, Laura, and her cherished pets. She was born on June 22, 1939, in East Liverpool, Ohio, and was raised in Chester, West Virginia.
She was the daughter of the late Kathleen Vervin Gibbs and Roy Franklin Gibbs. Marlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, David J. Hornick. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Laura Hornick; her sister, Paula Gibbs Pinney; her sister-in-law, Nancy Stackhouse Hornick; as well as several beloved nieces and her cherished pets.
Marlene met her husband, David, through a mutual friend while she was in high school. Their lifelong love story led to a marriage that spanned 62 years. Together, they built a life in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, where Marlene worked alongside her husband helping to run his business for over 40 years.
A dedicated and compassionate caregiver, Marlene attended nursing school at Beaver Valley Hospital, becoming a registered nurse. She went on to serve at Mercy Hospital and Mayview Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she worked in both pediatric trauma and psychiatric care. Her lifelong commitment to nursing and service was recognized by the Sovereign Nurse Society.
Marlene was deeply involved in her community. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Ladies of Charity, and other charitable organizations. She was also a devoted member of Saint Louise de Marillac Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Saint Timothy’s Catholic Church in Lady Lake, Florida.
In her younger years, Marlene was honored as Queen of the Chester Parade, remembered for her beauty and grace. She had a lifelong passion for reading, quilting, and sewing, and was known as a talented seamstress. Above all, she was a kind, social, and compassionate woman who treasured her family and friendships.
On June 24, 1969, Marlene and David adopted their daughter, Laura, through Catholic Charities in Pittsburgh, a moment that brought immense joy and purpose to her life. Her love, empathy, and devotion will be deeply missed, especially by her daughter Laura, who was the center of her world.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Baldwin Brothers Funeral & Cremation Society. A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Timothy’s Catholic Church in Lady Lake, Florida, with a service in her hometown to be announced at a later date.
