Obituary

Mary Barrios, 78, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026, after a brief illness. Born on March 13, 1948, in New Jersey, Mary was raised by her beloved mother, Bernice Kolash. She grew into a woman of strength, determination, and compassion, qualities that defined her throughout her life.

While John Barrios was serving in the military, Mary met the man who would become the love of her life. They were married on January 26, 1968, beginning a devoted partnership that would span nearly five decades. Early in their marriage, the young couple embarked on an unforgettable adventure, driving across the country to California in a blue Volkswagen. California became their home for approximately 30 years, where they built their lives together and raised their family.

During the 1970s, while balancing family responsibilities and supporting her husband's career, Mary attained her master's degree, reflecting her determination, intelligence, and lifelong love of learning. Following John's retirement, the couple returned east, first settling in Chicago and eventually moved to Florida to be closer to family. Together they traveled extensively, exploring the world and creating cherished memories. When John became ill, Mary devoted herself completely to his care, providing unwavering love and support until his passing on November 19, 2014.

After her husband's death, Mary moved to the East Coast to be near her daughter. She later relocated to Arizona, then eventually settled in Venice, Florida, where she enjoyed an active and fulfilling life.

Mary is survived by her children, John Barrios Jr. and Adrian Murphy; and by her beloved grandchildren, Lance, Luke, Helen, Ana, Noah, and Zachary, whom she absolutely adored. She also leaves many dear friends from the Bay Indies Resort Community, where she was affectionately known as the "Flamingo Lady." Her love of flamingos was legendary, extending even to a flamingo tattoo that she proudly wore as a symbol of the colorful joy she brought to others.

Mary will be remembered for her intelligence, resilience, adventurous spirit, warm heart, and unwavering devotion to family and friends. Her legacy of love, kindness, and strength will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life honoring Mary will be held on November 7, 2026. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished
