Matilda Deen Burroughs Palm
November 21, 1934 – February 1, 2025
With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Matilda "Deen" Burroughs Palm on February 1, 2025, at the age of 90. She passed peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on November 21, 1934, in Umatilla, Florida, Deen was the daughter of Simon Virlis and Marie Deen Burroughs. She grew up in Umatilla, Tampa, and Plant City, forming lifelong friendships along the way. She attended the University of Florida, where she was a proud member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and a devoted Gator. It was there that she met the love of her life, William H. "Bill" Palm. They married in 1955 and shared 70 wonderful years together.
Shortly after their wedding, Deen and Bill began their journey together, moving frequently in the early years while Bill serviced in the Air Force. In 1957, they settled in Orlando, Florida, where they built a loving home and raised their two children. Deen found joy as a fourth-grade teacher in Orange County, sharing her passion for Florida history. In 1974, they moved to Winter Park, where she delighted in hosting countless family celebrations throughout the years.
Her life was filled with joy, creativity, and deep connections. She had a warm and generous spirit, always surrounded by family and friends who adored her. She was an artist, a pianist, an avid gardener, a collector of antiques and dolls, and a devoted golfer who never missed a weekly game. She and Bill traveled extensively, visiting every U.S. state and many countries, but her favorite place was always their beloved beach house in New Smyrna Beach.
Above all, Deen was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was the heart of her family, oƯering love, wisdom, and unwavering support. She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Rebecca Carrigan (Bob) and Bobby Palm (Mary); grandchildren, James Palm (Elma), Bailey Farren (Evan), Georgianna Palm, and Robert Carrigan (Rebecca); and three great-grandchildren.
Her kindness, love, and joyful spirit will forever be cherished by those who knew her.
