Obituary

Matthew Todd Watson, known to family and friends as Matt, age 52 of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 3, 2026 following a brief illness.

Matt was born in Orlando, Florida on November 20, 1973, to Karen Austin and John Watson, Jr. His childhood was spent largely outdoors where he discovered his love of fishing at an early age. Fishing remained one of his greatest passions throughout his life. Some of the most treasured memories were made during family vacations aboard their sailboats, fishing the waters of the Florida Intracoastal Waterway and the Bahamas. As an adult, Matt often shared his catches with his mother, a gesture which will always be remembered.

Matt began his career as an arborist in Orlando before moving to New Smyrna Beach in 2007. He continued working as a tree climber for nearly 20 years, a career that reflected his love of the outdoors. More recently he worked in the restaurant industry, where he especially enjoyed being part of the Merk’s Restaurant family, a place that he loved and was loved in return.

Matt’s Christian faith was an important part of his life as he spent quiet time daily with his Bible, and in meditation and prayer. He found a sense of belonging and fellowship at Edgewater Union Church and was loved by his church family and Pastor Brandon Hageman.

Matt had a kind and giving heart and looked for opportunities to give back and help others, especially others struggling with life’s challenges. His compassion for others, his willingness to lend a hand and positive outlook left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Matt will be remembered for his love of family, his faith, his passion for fishing and the outdoors, and his generous spirit. Above all, he will be remembered for the kindness he showed others and the lives he touched along the way. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, church family and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

Matt is survived by his mother, Karen Austin (Roger); his father, John Watson, Jr. (Sharon); his brothers, Chris Watson and Andy Watson (Elena ); and his daughter, Lana Skrocki. He is also survived by his aunts, Lynn Sweeten, Bitsy Hoopingarner and Sherry Smith (Dave); his cousins, Josh Hoopingarner (Courtney), Elisa DeBacco (Tony), Nancy Waits (Bill), Sean Patrick, and Kevin Patrick, (Becky); and many other loving family members and friends.

A Celebration of Matt’s Life will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2026 at 3pm at United Church of Christ, 203 Washington Street, New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
