Michael grew up surfing in Cocoa Beach, spending most of his time outdoors. He loved fishing, boating, and motorcycle racing and was a history buff. He was also an avid pool player who enjoyed friendly competition and shared good times with friends. His favorite place in the world was Italy, a destination he dreamed of revisiting. Michael was known for his generosity, famously saying he would give you the shirt off his back—just don't ask for his last cigarette. One of his favorite mottos was, "Lighten up, Frances," a sentiment that reflected his playful spirit.

Professionally, Michael was dedicated to his work, helping to rebuild homes destroyed by disasters, making a difference in his community. He is preceded by his mother, Susan Rettell Whitten, and survived by his wife, Valerie Whitten, 3 children, Abigail, Kylie, and Noah, Aunt Renee Sigel, cousins, Spencer and Treavor Sigel, as well as a host of friends and family who will remember him fondly.
