Obituary

Mildred Elizabeth Poland, 80, of Ormond Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on October 31, 2024. She was born on February 1, 1944, in Neptune, New Jersey, to William G. Hutchinson Jr. and Marion Hutchinson.

Mildred is survived by her three children: William Poland (and wife Trude), Deborah Long (and husband Richie), and Kenneth Poland (and wife Diana); her beloved sister, Ethel Piancone; brothers John (and wife Jana), and Micheal (and wife Robin); as well as five grandchildren: Braeden, Brandi, Wayne, Stephen, and Heather. Mildred was also the proud great-grandmother of eight: Prince, Willow, Raiden, Nicole, Madison, Cassie, Emma, and Chloe.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Poland; her brother, William Hutchinson; and her parents.

Mildred worked for over 20 years as an assembler for the military, contributing to her country's defense efforts before retiring in 2007. After her retirement, she moved from New Jersey to Florida to be with her daughter Deborah. She loved her new life in the Sunshine State, enjoying the slower pace of retirement and spending her days in simple pleasures, whether curling up in her recliner with a good book or playing games on her tablet.

A gifted crafter, Mildred's talents were cherished by her family and friends. She created beautiful crocheted baby clothes and blankets that will be remembered as treasured gifts. She was also known for her creative spirit—crafting wind chimes, sewing Halloween costumes, and always making something with her hands. Her nickname, "Betty," was inspired by her love for the iconic character Betty Boop, and she was rarely seen without a Betty Boop-themed t-shirt, earrings, or purse.

Mildred was known for her warmth, humor, and generosity. She had a kind heart and was a lover of animals, often caring for strays, feeding wildlife, and providing shelter for any creature in need. Her family will always remember her as a funny, kind, and giving woman who found joy in the simple things in life.

Above all, Mildred was devoted to her family and found peace in being surrounded by them in her final days. She was content in knowing that she had lived a full and happy life.

Mildred will be laid to rest at a later date with her beloved husband at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Though she is gone, her memory will live forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
