Obituary

Nancy Merle Mabry Overbey, a woman of unwavering faith, and quintessential Southern charm, was called home to her Heavenly Father on April 2, 2026, at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, faith, and quiet strength.

Born May 5, 1940, in Jackson, Mississippi, Nancy grew up with a deep love of music, family, and community — values she carried with her throughout her life.She was the daughter of the late Edward L. Mabry and Merle Waldrop Mabry, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Gaylon G. Overbey.

Nancy is survived by her son, Jeff Kuyrkendall of Gainesville, FL; her daughter, Denise K. Smith of Baton Rouge, LA; and her sister, Charlotte M. Anderson (Darryl) of Petaluma, CA.

She was a devoted grandmother to Meghan Smith and Dylan Harvey, and a proud great‑grandmother to Blaise Carter, Gage Smith, Demi Harvey & Rhett Harvey.Nancy graduated high school in Jackson Miss and attended Hinds Community College and Mississippi University for Women, later earning a Paralegal Degree from Bay Area Legal College. Her career included work in real estate, mineral asset management for Shriners Crippled Children’s Hospitals, trust services with Sun Bank and Barnett Bank, and commercial lending with Bank of America, where she retired in 2001.She lived in many communities across Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida, receiving the Civic Woman of the Year Award in Picayune and spent many hours of her time in charity projects for the Junior Auxiliary in Gulfport. After retirement, she and Gaylon settled in Gainesville, where they enjoyed supporting the Florida Gators.

Nancy first love was playing the piano and listening to others play she also enjoyed traveling, cross‑stitching, reading, attending sporting event and spending time at home with Gaylon.

A memorial service with inurnment will be held at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. May 1 2026. Nancy will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Gaylon, in the columbarium,

Her favorite Bible verses were Isaiah 53:6 and John 14:1

she cherished the hymns “Because He Lives” and “How Great Thou Art.”

While our hearts are heavy, we rejoice in knowing she is at rest in the arms of her Savior.
