Obituary

Janice Syverson, age 88, peacefully passed on August 15, 2025.  Jan was the youngest child of Marie and Reinhold Sackman born in October 1936 in Underwood, North Dakota.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Union Congregational Church in Turtle Lake, ND.  Jan attended Veeder rural school for eight years and then attended Turtle Lake High School and graduated in 1954.  Jan and her mother moved from the family farm into Turtle Lake when her father passed.  Her brother, Bert, returned from California to run the farm for her mother.

After graduation, she attended Business College in Fargo, ND. A small-town girl moved to the big city and only knew one person, Mel Syverson.  Jan took a job as secretary at Dacotah Paper Company and worked there while Mel attended college.   Mel had just returned home after serving three years in the U.S. Navy and immediately started college at North Dakota State University.  Mel and Jan were united in marriage on June 11, 1955, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Turtle Lake.

Mel and Jan were blessed with three sons.  Timothy Alan was born in 1958, Terry Dean in 1960 and Brent David in 1961.  Their family of five became known as the nomads of the family.  After graduation they moved to Riverdale, ND; Boise, Idaho; Seattle, Washington, back to North Dakota and finally landed in Titusville, FL in 1963.  All the moves were associated with the Space Program.  After the Apollo missions ended, they moved to Umatilla, FL where they  bought and ran the Western Auto store for five years.  Jan worked for the Lake County Board of Realtors until 1984 when they both moved back to Titusville, FL.  where both returned to work in the Space Industry.  Jan retired from McDonnell Douglas in 1994. Jan was well respected for her efficiency and organizational skills in every job she held.  Mom and Dad retired to five acres in rural Umatilla (The Farm). Their last move was to New Smyrna beach in 2002 where they became members of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Jan was very active in many church activities at their new church.

Jan was a great baker, made friends everywhere she went and made our house a home wherever we lived.  She was very dedicated to her family and made sure all her sons made it to all the sporting events they participated in over the years.  She loved sports.  She played softball as a pitcher in North Dakota. She was a huge University of Central Florida Knights sports fan. Charge on!!  Jan and Mel were original football season ticket holders in 1979 at the Citrus Bowl.  Before she moved to Lexington Place, she was still baking brownies for Tim's Senior Softball teams.  At Lexington she made many friends and loved playing Rummikub and Wii bowling.  She loved sharing meals with what I called her "Posse".  Her family and friends will forever cherish the joy and kindness she shared throughout her life.

Jan is survived by two sons, Tim (Cheri), New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Terry (Marieanne) Clovis, California;  seven grandsons: Chris Weldon, Clermont, FL;  Jared Syverson, Edgewater, FL; Tyler (Mallory) Syverson, New Smyrna Beach;  Steve (Vanessa) Janic, Palm Harbor, FL; Mark (Pam) Janic, Gansevoort, NY; Logan (Michaela) Syverson, Bartow, FL and Jacob Syverson,  and many nieces, nephews and great grandchildren and cherished friends..

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Mel, her son Brent; her brother Bert Sackman; her sisters: Helen Sackman, Violet Nelson, Frances Kvamme and Alice Wiese.
