It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John "Buddy" Gorman, who left us peacefully on August 12, 2025 in Fort Myers, Florida. John was born in the Bronx on August 21, 1944 and raised in Rosedale, Queens. John lived a life full of purpose, dedication, and love. He was 80 years old at the time of his passing. John was the beloved son of Alicia Gorman and John Gray Gorman. He grew up in a close-knit family and cherished memories with his sister, Florence Gorman, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife, Carmela (nee Stavola) Gorman, with whom he shared a beautiful life and marriage since June 3, 1967. Together they raised two wonderful children, John Gorman and Barbara Cormier, who brought him immense pride and joy.

John was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Clare Wise, Terence Wise, Tristan Gorman, Aidan Gorman, Audrey Gorman, Ursula Cormier and Grace-Anne Cormier. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them, sharing stories, laughter, and wisdom. A distinguished member of the New York City Police Department, John dedicated 35 years of his life to serving and protecting the community. His career spanned from 1965 to 2000, during which he held significant roles including Commanding Officer of the Hostage Negotiation Team,  Commanding Officer of the Technical Assistance Response Unit (TARU) and Commanding Officer of the Bronx District Attorney's Office. He was also a member of the 014th Precinct (Midtown South), the 77th Precinct Detective Squad, the Public Morals Squad, the Organized Crime Control Bureau (OCCB) and Patrol Borough Manhattan North. John's commitment to his duty and his exemplary service earned him great respect and admiration from colleagues and the community alike. He was a distinguished member of the NYPD Honor Society.

An avid reader, John found joy in sailing and golfing, hobbies that allowed him to indulge in his love for the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. His adventurous spirit and enthusiasm for life were contagious, inspiring those around him to embrace each day with gratitude.

John was a man of deep integrity and kindness. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His warm smile, and genuine compassion made him a beloved figure among family and friends.

John is also survived by his brothers, Joseph "Mickey" Gorman and Thomas Gorman, who, alongside his family and friends, will carry on his legacy of love and strength.

The wake will be held from 5-9pm on Sunday August 17, 2025 at Baldwin Brothers located at 4320 Colonial Blvd, Fort Myers, FL. A funeral mass will be held on August 18, 2025, at 10:00am at St. John XXIII located at 13060 Palomino Lane, Fort Myers, Florida.

As we bid farewell to John "Buddy" Gorman, we find solace in the memories we shared, the love he gave, and the countless lives he touched. His spirit will forever remain in our hearts, guiding us with the lessons he imparted and the love he shared.

He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the NYPD community. May he rest in eternal peace.
