Obituary

Joyce Lee Roberts (née O'Connor) passed away peacefully at her home on December 30, 2025, at the age of 90, in The Villages, Florida with family holding her hand. Born on January 4, 1935, in Clinton, Massachusetts, Joyce lived a full and vibrant life marked by her roles as a dedicated military spouse, loving mother and grandmother, faithful friend, and active golfer.

Joyce's journey as an Army spouse spanned over two decades, during which she provided unwavering support to her husband, Col. Rodney K. Roberts, and their family through numerous relocations both in the United States and abroad. Her resilience and adaptability were evident as she made homes in diverse locations including Fitchburg, MA, Petaluma, CA, Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines, Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Wiesbaden, Germany, and multiple cities in Virginia.

Professionally, Joyce was equally versatile, working as a dental assistant, deputy sheriff, and nail technician at various stages of her life. She enjoyed each job and made some lifelong friends.

Beyond her professional and family life, Joyce was an enthusiastic member of the Springfield Golf and Country Club in Virginia and multiple golf groups in The Villages. She was an avid and talented golfer, played bocce ball and cards, and was known for her easy smile and great sense of humor. Joyce also had a passion for dancing, Hallmark movies, coffee and a good dessert, and caring for many beloved dogs, cats, and birds throughout her life.

Joyce is survived by her daughters, Wendy Roberts, Roberta (Bobbi) Duncan and her husband Ronald; son, James Nicholson and his wife Lisa; grandchildren, Daniel Roberts, Kory Duncan and his wife Ellen, Kyle Duncan and his wife Allie, Deondre Roberts, Jessica Stevens; James Matthew Nicholson and his wife Jaclyn, Sean Michael Nicholson and his wife Cathy, and Shannon Marie Nicholson; ten great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, John Roberts and his wife Dee; eight nieces and nephews; and family friend, Todd Noland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Rodney K. Roberts; mother, Hazel A. O'Connor; adoptive father, George M. O'Connor; brother-in-law, Thomas Roberts and his wife Clara Ann; and several beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

In lieu of services, those wishing to honor Joyce's memory may make contributions to Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care of The Villages, the American Lung Association , or a local animal shelter of their choice. Baldwin Brothers of The Villages, FL, is assisting the family with arrangements and Joyce will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband at a later date. Joyce will be missed deeply and remembered fondly for her loyalty, love, strength, and enduring spirit.
