IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joyce Cowne
Schollenberger
May 18, 1934 – September 1, 2025
Our beloved mother, grandmother, wife and aunt, Joyce Brady (Cowne) Schollenberger, 91, of Brooksville, FL, passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2025. Joyce lived her life with faith, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to her family. Born in 1934 to parents Thurman Brady and DeLois Burge Brady in the small community of Greenwich VA, Joyce grew up in the countryside that shaped her hardworking and joyful spirit.
This tenacity and determination in her youth carried Joyce through every season of her life—from her days on the basketball court as a star player for Brentsville District High School, to continuing that athletic prowess by playing tennis for many decades into retirement, to commuting to Washington DC after graduation to work at the Pentagon for the Department of Defense, to her years raising her children on a dairy farm, tending a bountiful vegetable garden, canning and freezing the harvest with pride, while somehow keeping the family home always spotless. She was a force to be reckoned with and always dressed impeccably yet never said no to time spent loving and caring for ailing friends and family. She later returned to the workforce as a paralegal secretary for a law firm in Manassas, VA before retiring to Florida with her husband George.
As a faithful and longtime member of the Nokesville United Methodist Church Choir while living in Virginia, Joyce blessed the congregation there with her musical gift of voice and her faith in God.
Joyce believed family was life's greatest blessing. She never tired of reminding her children and grandchildren to "love each other, stay close, and always be in touch." That legacy of her love, strength and togetherness will carry on through the generations she leaves behind. Joyce is survived by her husband, George Schollenberger; her children: sons, Stephen Cowne (Wendy Schoen Cowne) and Barton Cowne (Denise Hawkins Cowne), and daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Cowne; her 5 grandchildren: Aric Cowne, Justin Cowne, Lauren Cowne, Ryan Cowne and Austin Cowne; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; her 5 very precious nieces and 1 nephew: Pamela Brady Ferrara, Kimberly Brady White, Josie Brady Carlson, Michelle Brady Leavell, Candie Brady Settle, and Tony Brady; her stepson, Charles Schollenberger, extended family and good friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her dear younger brothers, Thurman "Brother" Brady, Jr., and James "Jimmy" Brady; and by her first husband, Lloyd Cowne, Jr.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Northern VA in the fall of 2025. While Joyce did love flowers, her family asks that in lieu of them, please consider donating in her memory to a charity of your choice and letting us know. We will truly appreciate this honor made in her name. The family would also like to thank Accent Hospice of Hernando County, FL, and Darla, Julie and Alicia for their loving care of Joyce during her final months, and for helping to ease our hearts.
Joyce's love was the thread that bound her family together, and although she will be missed deeply, her spirit will continue to guide and inspire all those who knew her.
