Obituary

Mary Lou Nethers passed away on September 19, 2025, after fighting cancer for eight years.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1954, Mary Lou moved with her family to Haines City, Florida, where she grew up and graduated high school in 1972. She went on to earn her degree in Accounting from the University of Florida in 1979—an accomplishment she took great pride in as a dedicated Gator.

A natural problem solver and lifelong "techie," Mary Lou built a successful career in tech support before retiring. Known affectionately in her neighborhood as the "fix-it mom," she was the one everyone turned to when something broke—whether it was a computer or a toy. (And everyone knew Larry wasn't allowed near her toolbox!)

Mary Lou had a gift for making people feel welcome. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend who filled her home with warmth, laughter, and love. She was also a passionate advocate for equality and justice, never hesitating to stand up for what she believed in—often quite literally, at a protest.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Larry; daughter, Brittany; bonus daughter, Veronica; son-in-law, Lee; and sisters, Vicki and Sandra.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, Mary Lou's wishes were for donations to be made to the ACLU.
