William Gary Gunter, Sr. May 30, 1944 – September 11, 2025
William "Bill" Gary Gunter, Sr., age 81, beloved husband of 58 years to Barbara (Cunliffe) Gunter, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, in Florida.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on May 30, 1944, to the late William and Jean Harvey Gunter, Bill lived in Florida, California, and New Jersey before moving to Fairfield, Connecticut in 1954. After graduating from Andrew Warde High School, he proudly served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.
Bill joined SNET in 1967, where he dedicated 30 years before his retirement. He married Barbara in 1967, and together they settled in Stratford, raising their three children. He often said he didn't know where he would be without her, and lovingly referred to her as a saint.
Bill was predeceased by his older brother, Dick, whom he was honored to have as his best friend through life. They shared a bond that was admired by all who knew them.
A proud Mason, Bill was a longtime member of St. John's Lodge #8 in Stratford, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1997.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Barbara, his son William Gunter (Lilly), daughter Elizabeth Granger (Edward), and daughter Susan Vano (Anthony); his grandchildren Dylan Vano (Lex), Bryan Vano (Jessica), and Avery and Reagan Granger; and his great-grandchildren Ava, Cole, Oakley, and Brayden, who brought him endless joy.
He enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family. There was no project he was afraid to tackle—he was always available to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.
Bill's legacy is one of dedication, love, and quiet strength. His family will forever remember his humor, his generosity, and his unwavering devotion to those he loved.
