IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Owen Babb
Lopez
April 7, 1959 – February 28, 2026
In August 2020 Owen sent this out:
I am at the end of my journey. I did it My Way. I knew that the end would be harsh, painful, and quick spreading. But I did most of what I set out to do. Both of my daughters are happily married to nice respectful husbands who I hope will never hurt them or my grandkids. I traveled to the world’s most beautiful cities. Vienna was amazing. Madrid had delicious seafood, Paris, Nice, Milan, Rome, Florence, Amsterdam, Almere, the North Sea beaches, Brussels. The tulip fields in Holland, the Mediterranean beaches, Barcelona, Sevilla, Valencia, Benidorm, Toledo, Avila. The running of the bulls Pamplona, Bern, Munich, Berlin, the German Palaces of the Alps in Bavaria, Hamburg, Cologne, Basel, Geneva, Salzburg, Dusseldorf, the Nazi museums, San Juan Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Pretoria, Midrand, Durban, Rustenburg, Soweto, Mandela’s home. Fortaleza, Recife, Natal, Manaus, Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paola, Southern Mexico, Belize, Toronto Canada, and all over the USA (major cities: Miami, Tampa, Atlanta, DC, NYC, Buffalo, Boston, Albany, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Grand Rapids, Chicago, Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Six Flags, Busch Gardens, Virginia, all the resorts in Orlando, Mount Rushmore, and the Grand Canyon National parks.
I earned Soccer Coach of the Year in 1994, many district championship finals. I was inducted into the Florida Foreign Language Teacher’s Hall of Fame. My teaching at the AP level was wonderful. My students earned their college credits. I got three promotions in the US Army Reserves: E-2, E-3, and E-4. Very few can say that, and for that I am very thankful. Not to mention my many various fun-filled trips to Belize and Honduras to hang out with my family and high school friends not because I had to, but because I wanted to. My wife was the best wife I would have asked for. Yes, brother, I had a Great Life! Much too short for my grandkids (11, 7, and 2) but the oldest will remember me coaching his soccer team. Nothing but Love and Gratitude for all the friends I made along the way. August 2, 2020.
In the five years after he wrote that, he traveled to California, Suriname, Belize and Washington DC. He watched his grandson, Michael, play competitive soccer; and he watched his grandson, Christopher, perform in two drama productions; and his grandson, Remington, teach himself to read and write in Spanish and in English using You Tube.
