Obituary

Patricia Ann (Skaggs) Workman, originally from Harewood, West Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on July 22 nd , 2025.

Patricia was born on March 20, 1935, to William H. and Vivian O. Skaggs (Wade).  She had a very happy childhood growing up in Harewood and Longacre with her brothers Bobby and Harold and her sister Marilyn.

She graduated from Montgomery High School.  She enjoyed her time there and formed lifelong friendships.  She picked up the clarinet just so she could be in the marching band and became quite good at it, very much enjoying the camaraderie at the games.  In later years she loved attending high school reunions and reconnecting with old classmates.

After high school she went on to nurses training at McMillan Hospital School in Charleston; however, she had to leave to attend to her dying mother and look after her family.  This painful and difficult time formed the strong bond between the children which would last a lifetime.  After her mother passed away, she worked at Laird Hospital in Montgomery.  Once she had raised her own children Patricia fulfilled her ambition to become a nurse by becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse and caring for patients in a nursing home.

While working at Laird she met the love of her life, Walter Workman, and they went on to have a beautiful marriage of 65 years.   As newlyweds they moved to Cleveland where Walter pursued his doctorate degree and later to South Charleston, WV where Walter began his career at Union Carbide.  As the wife of a Carbider, Pat made the family homes where the job took Walter, in Charleston as well as Lansing, IL; Texas City, TX; London, England; Ponce, Puerto Rico; and Basking Ridge, NJ.  Walter and Patricia retired to The Villages, FL.

Patricia was a loving and caring companion, and Walter adored her.  They supported each other and brought each other much joy.  She was an understanding and tolerant mother, tender in matters of the heart; she listened well and gave wise and mature advice.  She was friendly and fun, known by her children's friends to be the most welcoming of parents, offering old fashioned hospitality and encouraging them to hurry back.  Patty loved singing and laughter and being silly at times.  She lived for family gatherings which often closed with her leading a heartfelt rendition of We'll Meet Again.

Patricia enjoyed church life over the years and faith was a pillar of her life. She also loved dancing; she and Walter participated in a square-dancing group and were enthusiastic members of the Latin Dance Club in Charleston.  As Villagers, Pat and Walter very much enjoyed meeting up at Panera with dear friends on Saturday mornings. Above all, Patricia loved family life and relished spending time with her husband and their relatives, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; truly, these times were Patricia's most treasured moments.

Patricia is preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter, and brother Bobby.  She is survived by her sons John (FL) and David (UK), sister Marilyn Jenkins (Skaggs, SC), brother Harold Skaggs (FL), grandchildren Erica (Tyler) Gallagher, Bailey, Jack, Quinn, Molly and Annabelle and great grandchildren Avonlea, Gwendolyn, Phinehas, Marigold and Evangeline.

Services for Patricia will be held on Saturday, August 23 rd , at 11:00 am at North Lake Presbyterian Church, Lady Lake, FL.
