If our mother’s life could be summed up in a few simple words, they would be these: a life well lived.

Patricia Ann Spanagel (Pat) was devoted to fully loving those God placed in her life—family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and acquaintances. All who were fortunate enough to be blessed by her love knew it flowed from the very place she also received it—Jesus.

It is with both heavy and grateful hearts that we mourn our dear mom's passing. Heavy because we miss her dearly. Grateful because she was able to live independently in her own home until Jesus peacefully took her in her sleep on July 23, 2026. It was just as she wanted and an answer to prayer.

It gives us great joy to know she was greeted and welcomed by so many beloved family members and friends who had gone before her.

Patricia Ann Spanagel (née Dirr) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on March 4, 1938, to John and Viola (Rennekamp) Dirr. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Albert Richard Spanagel (Dick); her parents, John and Viola Dirr; her brothers, Jerry Dirr and Gene Dirr; and her sisters, Mary Ellen Frey (Dirr) and Sharon Bollin Geisheimer (Dirr).

She is survived by her children: Kathi Holland (John), Steve Spanagel (Lisa), and RaeLynn DeAngelis (Gerry); her grandchildren: Dustin Nelson, Brendon Nelson (Tricia), Heather Hutzel (David), Ben DeAngelis (Abby), Tim Corbett-Spanagel (Zac), and Sami Charters (Francisco); and her great-grandchildren: Edwin "Eddie" Nelson, Samuel "Sammy" Nelson, Margarida "Mae Mae" Charters, Mateus "Teu" Charters, and Frederico "Freddy" Charters.

After graduating from Seton High School, marrying the love of her life, and raising her family as a stay-at-home mom, Pat returned to school and earned her degree from the University of Cincinnati, graduating with a 4.0 GPA, as a Registered Dietitian. She worked at Muscatatuck State Hospital in Indiana as a Licensed and Registered Dietitian and was eventually promoted to Director of the Dietary Department, where she faithfully served until retiring several years later.

Mom (and Dad) did everything with excellence. They had a strong work ethic and instilled those qualities in their children. They gave us a wonderful childhood filled with laughter and fun. Our days boating on the river and going to the farm with our second family, the VanDeRyts, gave us treasured memories we will carry throughout our lives.

When Mom wasn't taking care of her family, she spent countless hours volunteering at church and in her community. Among many other things, she faithfully served as Director of the Pregnancy Care Center in Harrison, Ohio, as well as Secretary/Treasurer of her condominium association in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Mom loved music, reading, puzzles, games, learning new things, studying the Bible, and spending quality time with family and friends. She was kind, loving, gentle, compassionate, generous, and sacrificial. She would do anything for those she loved, and she never complained.

After Dad's dementia diagnosis, Mom lovingly cared for her husband, Dick—our dad. Sacrificially, she placed Dad's needs above her own until Jesus took him home to heaven on September 7, 2022. Together once again, Mom and Dad are now enjoying their sweet rewards in heaven.

Mom, we are so very grateful for our time with you here and rejoice that one day we will also be with you there. Until then, our treasured memories will carry us through.

Well done, good and faithful servant. Well done.

Funeral arrangements are as follows:

Memorial Mass will take place Thursday, August 20, 2026 (11:00 AM) at the Catholic Church of Epiphany (201 Lafayette St. Port Orange, FL 32127).

Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, October 10, 2026 (11:00 AM) at Willie’s Banquet Hall (19325 Schmarr Dr. Lawrenceburg, IN 47025).
