Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we share the sudden passing of Paul Heineman, 89, of Port Orange, Florida, on December 5, 2024. Paul departed this life surrounded by his devoted wife of 68 years, Nancy (Ferris) Heineman, and their cherished daughters, Darcie (Rich Gallo) and Honore (Shane Adams). Born on July 10, 1935, in Peekskill, New York, Paul was the beloved son of William and Elvina (Seymour) Heineman. Paul and Nancy were married in 1956 at St. Peter's Church in Peekskill, NY, and together built a life defined by love, faith, and family. They began their journey in Peekskill before moving to Danbury, Connecticut, where they attended Danbury State College. Paul went on to earn his Bachelor's degree in Education and later his Master's degree at NYU, laying the foundation for a remarkable career in education. Paul began teaching in Mount Vernon, NY, before moving to Mohegan Lake and later Mahopac, NY, where he taught for the Lakeland School District. Beyond his role as an educator, Paul inspired students through music, performance, and directing, forging lifelong connections and shaping the lives of many who continued to seek his guidance as a mentor and friend. Upon retirement, Paul and Nancy settled in Port Orange, FL, where their enduring partnership and shared passions flourished. Paul served his country with honor after being drafted into the U.S. Army, working for the Office of the Adjutant General of First Army on Governors Island. His military service exemplified his dedication to duty and leadership. Paul's life was a testament to his unwavering faith in Christ and his commitment to his family, education, and community. He devoted over 60 years to music ministry, directing choirs at St.Peter's Episcopal Church in Peekskill, St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Mohegan Lake, NY, and later at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Daytona Beach, FL. He led choruses, taught Sunday school, served on church vestries, and deepened his faith through pilgrimages, including visits to Oberammergau and the Vatican. A gifted musician and choirmaster, Paul's contributions to the arts were extraordinary. He sang under the direction of the esteemed John Rutter and directed numerous ensembles, including a 50-member choir at Spruce Creek and a men's chorus. He also served as a board member of the Daytona Symphony Society, where his passion for music enriched the local community. Paul was also an avid sailor who found peace navigating the waters of the Hudson River and Long Island Sound. A member of the local yacht club, he shared his love of the sea with family and friends, embracing the joy and freedom of life on the water. Paul's interests extended far beyond music and sailing. He delighted in simple pleasures, from raising a glass with Nancy at "5 o'clock somewhere" to marveling at wildlife and the interplay of light in his home. A lifelong learner, he pursued interests in architecture, foreign studies, and the arts, including active participation as a Le Salon member of the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Paul's legacy is defined by his charm, compassion, intelligence, and peacemaking spirit. He leaves behind his wife, Nancy, and his children Darcie (Rich Gallo) and Honore (Shane Adams). He was a beloved "Papa" to his grandchildren: Kaitlin Gallo (Kyle Ferrara), Mason Adams (Amber Silvia), Kimberly Lovett (Daniel Lovett), Luke Adams (Christina Leva), and Harrison Adams.
