Penelope Susan
Hain
Feb 6, 1943 — Jun 27, 2026
Penelope "Penny" Hain, 83, passed away on June 27, 2026, in The Villages, Florida.
Penny will be remembered for her bright smile, generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to making a difference. Whether through her award-winning career in public radio, her tireless volunteer work, or her passionate advocacy for causes she believed in, she touched countless lives with her kindness, enthusiasm, and determination.
During her distinguished 28-year career at NPR in Washington, D.C., Penny served as producer and director of Performance Today, the nationally acclaimed classical music program that received the Peabody Award in 1998 and the National Medal of Arts Award for Excellence from the White House in 2000. She also produced stories for All Things Considered and Morning Edition. Her work earned numerous honors, including the Armstrong Award and the DuPont-Columbia Award, before she retired from NPR in 2007.
Before joining NPR in 1978, Penny served as Director of Public Information at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, and later edited audiobooks for Simon & Schuster.
After moving to The Villages in 2007, Penny embraced her community with the same energy and passion that defined her career. She served as a golf ambassador at Cane Garden Country Club, but her greatest joy came from volunteering and encouraging others to get involved. A proud, lifelong Democrat who affectionately called herself a "Yellow Dog Democrat," Penny was an active member of the Sumter County Democratic Executive Committee and proudly represented Florida as a delegate to the 2020 Democratic National Convention. Her optimism, infectious smile, and ability to inspire others made her a cherished friend and role model to many.
Penny's compassion extended beyond people to the animals she loved. She volunteered with Shih Tzu and Fur Babies Rescue and spent countless hours caring for horses at the Wildwood Girl Scout Camp equestrian center.
A native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Penny began her journalism career as a wire editor for the Somerset Daily American. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from American University in Washington, D.C., where she was inducted into Kappa Tau Alpha, the national journalism honor society.
Penny was preceded in death by her parents, Rollin and Annabelle Hain, and her sister, Patricia Landon. She is survived by her beloved spouse, Leesa Bond of The Villages, Florida; her nieces, Amy Arnel and Nicole Hughes of New York; and her brother-in-law, Thomas Landon of Delaware.
Penny's legacy lives on through the many lives she enriched, the causes she championed, and the example she set of living with purpose, compassion, and hope.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
