Penny
Pritchard McDonough
Apr 5, 1940 — May 24, 2026
Penny Pritchard McDonough, 86, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, grace, talent, and devotion to family.
Born on April 5, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, Penny was the daughter of Ted and Evelyn Pritchard. Her lifelong love of performing began unexpectedly in childhood when her younger brother, Ted, was enrolled in dance classes after his parents feared he might be developing polio. Fortunately, he was healthy, and Penny decided to join him in the classes. What began as a childhood activity became a shared passion that shaped both of their lives.
Penny earned her master’s degree from Ohio University and shared her love of the arts by teaching theater classes before pursuing a professional career as a singer, actress, and tap dancer. Her talents led her to the professional stage when her brother Ted was cast as George M. Cohan’s father and understudy in the Broadway touring production of George M!. When producers asked if he had anyone else in his family who could sing, dance, and act, Ted proudly recommended his sister. In 1968, Penny and Ted spent nearly a year touring the country together with the production, which told the story of legendary entertainer George M. Cohan, whose beloved songs included Yankee Doodle Dandy, Over There, You’re a Grand Old Flag, and Give My Regards to Broadway.
Throughout her performing career, Penny appeared in Neil Simon productions, performed with Playhouse on the Green, and appeared in shows featuring the legendary Carol Channing. Whether on stage or off, Penny brought joy, warmth, enthusiasm, and elegance to everyone around her.
In 1976, Penny met the love of her life, Thornton McDonough, affectionately known as “T.” Their meeting came during a difficult chapter in T’s life. His first wife, Dorothy McDonough, and their son, Christopher “Toby” McDonough, had tragically died in a house fire, and his oldest son, Mark, had been severely burned. At the time, Penny had returned to Cleveland from New York City to settle her mother’s affairs following her passing. In an act of kindness that reflected her generous spirit, she offered to rent her mother’s home to T and his family. What began as friendship blossomed into love, and on August 23, 1980, Penny and T were married.
During their nearly 22 years of marriage, Penny and T shared a wonderful life filled with golf, travel, friendship, and entrepreneurial adventures. They divided their time between Cleveland, Ohio, and Naples, Florida, creating cherished memories with family and friends wherever they went. Both were avid golfers who loved the game and the friendships it brought into their lives.
On June 26, 2002, T passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Penny never remarried, but she was blessed to spend more than a decade alongside her dear companion and best friend, Bill Terry, whose friendship brought her comfort, companionship and joy.
Although Penny never had children of her own, she embraced her role as grandmother wholeheartedly. She adored her grandchildren and treated them as if they were her own. She never missed a birthday or holiday. Her gifts were always thoughtful, her cards always personal, and they were invariably signed with her trademark closing: “Love and God Bless.”
Penny will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, her sense of humor, unwavering devotion to family, and the joy she brought to everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her life was a beautiful performance filled with love, kindness, laughter and grace.
She is survived by her sons, Mark (Joan) McDonough and Dan (Jan) McDonough; her sister-in-law, Jimmi Pritchard; her nephews, Colin Pritchard and Jason Pritchard; Beth Nicolay; her grandchildren, Ryan (Mikaela) McDonough, Connor McDonough, Ally (Tyson) Turley, Riley (Heather) McDonough, Jack McDonough, Toby McDonough, Piper Nicolay, and Cade Nicolay; and her great-grandchildren, Lyla Turley, August Turley, Leo Turley, Arlington Turley, and Wolf McDonough.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thornton “T” McDonough; her parents, Ted and Evelyn Pritchard; her beloved brother and lifelong dance partner, Ted Pritchard; and her stepchildren, Christopher “Toby” McDonough, Patrick “Packy” McDonough, and Timothy “Tim” McDonough.
Her family finds comfort in knowing that Penny’s curtain call is not an ending, but the final bow of a life beautifully lived and deeply loved.
