Obituary

Richard "Dick" Haimbaugh , age 89, of The Villages, Florida, formerly of Grayslake, Illinois, passed away on February 13, 2025. Dick was a devoted husband to his adoring wife, Carol Haimbaugh with whom he shared over 40 years of love and partnership.

Dick was born and raised in Rochester, Indiana, the eldest of 6 siblings, and later moved Elmhurst, Illinois where he attended York Community High School. He went on to pursue higher education, earning his Bachelors of Science in Metallurgy Engineering in 1953 from the University of Illinois.

After completing his degree Dick began his career in the Allison Division of General Motors before serving in the Army where he worked as a mechanical engineer in the Army Rocket Guided Missile section at Redstone Arsenal.   Upon leaving the Army, Dick attended the University of Chicago and earned his MBA degree.  His career led him to become a lifetime member of the ASM International, and serving on the board and earing his place as a Founding Member in 1994. Eventually his career lead him to teach ASM's Practical Induction Heat Treating". In 2008 The ASM held the "Richard E. Haimbaugh Symposium" honoring him for his years of service to the Heat Treating Society.

Alongside his profession pursuits, Dick found time to embrace life and enjoy his family. In 1973 Dick completed his first solo flight at the Dacy Airport and earned his commercial pilot license from Galt Flying Service in 1975.  He was a proud father to two loving sons, Ronald and Bradley, and was very active in their lives.  He led them in boy scouts, enjoyed regular family ski trip to Colorado, and took trips to Rochester to camp at the family "Haimbaugh Round Barn".  Dick also served on the Board of Education for Cary Community Consolidated District where his sons attended school.

Dick found love, comfort and enjoyment with his wife Carol whom he married in 1985.  While living in Grayslake, Illinois with Carol, Dick, completing his first 10k in 1994.  They enjoyed wintering in the Florida Keys, and often spent summers in their summer home in Door County.  They extensively traveled going to places such as the Indonesian Islands, the Hawaiian Islands, Italy, Switzerland, France, Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales and so many more wonderful places.  He was a big supporter of Carol's advanced art and craft activities, always encouraging her to continue with her dreams.  They enjoyed attending musicals and theaters, his favorite musical being Phantom of the Opera which he often played on his piano.

In 1989 he became a grandfather to Roxanne and Ian (Lori), followed by Nathan (Ron) and soon after, Jasper and Shailynn (Julie).  Dick adored his grandchildren and attended their sporting events, camping, trips to Disney and cruising. He was considered to be a very funny grandfather.  Recently Dick enrolled in two magic classes and entertained his family with amazing card tricks. Dick also enjoyed spending time with his many nieces and nephews, supporting and attending their many activities.

Retirement with Carol in The Villages kept him busy and active.  He loved playing tennis and had a regular morning schedule with a group of friends.  He enjoyed golf, he was an avid reader.  He truly enjoyed dancing in the square with Carol and spending quite time at their home holding hands and watching shows on history and mystery.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol and family including his son Ronald Haimbaugh, daughters Lori Drygas-Mendez, Julie Freeman (Stephan Sarver), grandchildren Roxanne Crowley, Ian Mendez, Nathan Haimbaugh, Jasper Sarver and Shailynn Sarver, siblings Jane Haimbaugh Price, Kurt Haimbaugh (Nancy), David Haimbaugh (Linda), and Karen ("Kay") Haimbaugh Tudor (Gary), sister-in-law Kathy Bruessel (Don, Nicholaus). He was preceded in death by his parents, Violet and Omer Haimbaugh, his son Bradley Haimbaugh and his sister Mary Secrist.

A memorial open house to honor this wonderful man will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2025, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at Sea Breeze Center, The Villages, Florida. Dick lived a full and active life, he enriched the lives of many and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
