IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard
Hubert
October 25, 1944 – April 20, 2025
Richard G. Hubert passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 20, 2025 after a brief fight with cancer. A beloved family man, his legacy will live on in those he leaves behind. Richard was born in Yonkers, NY on October 25, 1944, to Douglas G. Hubert and Margery (Smith) Hubert. He spent his childhood in Bronxville, NY and his summers at Tupper Lake, NY where the Hubert family owned a lake cabin for 110 years. The Hubert family moved to West Hartford, CT in 1960 where Richard attended Conard High School (class of 1962) and attended the First Church of Christ Congregational. It was there that he met his high school sweetheart Patricia Ann Miller (Conard class of 1963), whom he later married after college.
Richard received a 4 year ROTC Navy scholarship to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY where he studied naval science and electrical engineering, and practiced rifle drills and fencing. Richard graduated from RPI with an Electrical Engineering degree and a Navy officer commission as an Ensign specializing in weapons systems in June 1966. Richard and Patricia (Miller) Hubert were married in June 1966 and were stationed at the naval facility in Norfolk, VA for two years. During his Navy service in the Vietnam War period (1966-1972), Richard and Patricia were able to travel and expand their worldview. They were stationed at the naval facility in Antigua, British West Indies for two years. After the birth of their daughter, Carolyn, they relocated their young family back to Connecticut and Richard resigned from active duty, but remained in the Navy reserves until 1972. Richard continued his education at the University of New Haven where he received dual Masters Degrees in Business Administration and in Science and Industrial Engineering. His education and experience as an officer (Lieutenant) in the Navy prepared him for a long and successful career as a computer systems developer and engineer.
Richard was a pillar of strength in both his family and in his community. He was a faithful member of his local churches, the Trinity Episcopal Church and the Newtown Congregational Church in Newtown, CT where he served in many roles over the years. He was a Master Mason in the Hiram Lodge No. 18 in Sandy Hook, CT where he served in multiple positions as a lodge officer and state representative for 40 years. He was a member of Lady Martha Chapter #113 of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) and Past Patron of Mirah Chapter #103 in Sandy Hook. He was an officer and past President in the Ebenezer Baldwin branch of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) in Sandy Hook, CT. He was also an historical reenactor, portraying George Washington or other characters at various public events. Richard served for many years as a Boy Scout leader in Newtown both as a Scoutmaster of Troop 270, and later as a Boy Scout District Commissioner with the troop at Newtown Congregational Church in Newtown, CT.
He found immense joy in spending summers with his family at their island camp on Tupper Lake, NY in the Adirondack Park. It was here that he took his children and grandchildren fishing, boating, water skiing, camping, playing Euchre, and stargazing at night. As they grew up, the shared activities grew to hiking, archery, rifle target practice, and evenings by the fire pit in front of the cabin. Richard enjoyed a swift boat ride or "spin around the lake" and would classify his speed preference as "Mach 2 with his hair on fire!"
Whenever he was asked, "Pop, are you ready?", his response was always the same: "I was born ready!" He was everything a father and grandfather should strive to be and has set an example that will be followed for generations to come. Everyone who knew Richard will remember him for his kindness, his
broad and detailed knowledge, his sense of humor, his smile, and a chuckle. By the way… Richard wants to know if you heard "the gorilla joke"!
After his retirement in 2021, Richard and Patricia moved to The Villages, Florida to spend their days in the sun with his family. He continued his community service contributions and historical interests both as a speaker and reenactor at various social organizations before his passing.
Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia (Miller) Hubert of The Villages, Florida; his daughter, Carolyn (Hubert) Murray and son-in-law, John Murray of The Villages, FL; his son, Christopher G. Hubert and daughter-in-law Erin Mulkearns-Hubert of Richmond Heights (Cleveland), OH; sister Margie (Hubert) Wells and brother-in-law Kenyon Wells of Frederick, MD; and grandchildren Kyle Murray of Natick, MA, Julia Murray of St. Petersburg, FL., Ryan Murray of Syracuse, NY; Anna Hubert of Richmond Heights, OH, and Emmeline Hubert of Richmond Heights, OH. He was predeceased by his parents Douglas and Margery (Smith) Hubert of West Hartford and Newtown, CT.
The funeral service for Richard Hubert will be held at St. George Episcopal Church located at 1250 Paige Place in The Villages, Florida on May 16th at 4pm. The internment will be at the church Memorial Garden columbarium with a reception following in the church Parish house.
In lieu of flowers, please make any remembrance donations to Cornerstone Hospice Foundation, 601 Mariposa Way, The Villages, Florida 32162.
