He was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 14.
Bob left Princeton University and the family farm to join the United States Navy on June 5, 1944. D-Day occurred the following day, June 6, 1944. Having earned his Private Pilot's License in 1942 at the age of 16, he served as an airplane mechanic in the Advanced Base Naval Aviation Training Unit, Naval Aviation MTD, the Memphis Air Station, and the Norfolk Naval Air Station. Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Bob returned to Princeton University to complete his studies and graduated in 1949 (as a member of the Class of 1947), earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering.
