Obituary

Robert Nicholas Kopp, known affectionately as Bob, gracefully concluded his journey on Earth at the age of 83.  He was a man of remarkable integrity, thoughtfulness, and caring, known for his devotion as a loving husband, proud father, and cherished friend. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and cherished watching them grow up. They will miss him.

Born in Auburn, NY on August 2, 1940, to Nicholas Peter Kopp and Victoria L. Kopp (nee Wojtowicz), Bob's upbringing instilled in him a sense of duty and compassion that would define his life's purpose. He was a proud graduate of Auburn High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically, leaving his  mark on the football, baseball, and wrestling teams.

Bob's pursuit of knowledge led him to Tri-State College (now Trine University) in Angola, Indiana, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1962. Following graduation, he answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Air Force. Bob's service included a deployment to Vietnam from 1966 to 1967, where he flew as a navigator on the Douglass EC-47 Skytrain, an aircraft nicknamed "Electric Gooneys" because of its advanced electronics utilized in surveillance and intelligence gathering.  Bob earned commendations such as the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. His unwavering commitment to duty saw him rise to the rank of Captain before retiring from military service in 1969.

Transitioning to civilian life, Bob embarked on a distinguished career with Norton Company in Worcester, Massachusetts, where his expertise in engineering and sales contributed significantly to the company's success over three decades. Retirement beckoned in 2000, leading Bob and his beloved wife Marge to the serene community of the Villages in Florida, where they embraced life's adventures with open arms.  Bob enjoyed fishing, golf, softball, bridge and his true passion, road cycling, a sport both he and his wife Marge loved. Bob served as president of the Village Bicycle Club for two terms. He was active in many other clubs and social groups at the Villages and even served as a leader and instructor of the community's Parkinson's support group.

A consummate "tinkerer" and handy by nature, Bob could often be found around the house repairing outlets or putting together furniture.  He also enjoyed spending time at his workbench in his meticulously organized garage.  His philanthropic spirit knew no bounds, as he generously supported causes close to his heart, including the United Way, Salvation Army, and Habitat for Humanity.  Above all, he was loyal and committed to his family, his country, and his community. A devout Catholic, he was a parishioner at Saint Timothy's in Lady Lake.

Bob's passion for cycling was unparalleled, a pursuit he shared joyfully with Marge as they explored the world together on two wheels. Their travels spanned continents, from the rugged landscapes of the American West to the picturesque countryside of Europe, creating cherished memories together.

In his final years, Bob valiantly faced the challenges of Parkinson's disease with courage and grace, surrounded by the love and support of his devoted family and friends. His legacy of love and compassion will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Marjorie A. Kopp; his daughter Kimberlee A. Kimball and her husband Andrew Kimball of Dallas, GA; his son Chad N. Kopp and his wife Caroline T. Kopp of Westport, CT; his adored grandchildren Jackson and Dylan Kimball, and Emmeline and Declan Kopp; his sister Louise Kany and her husband Mickey; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Marilyn Pierce, her husband Donald Pierce, and nephew Richard Pierce.

A funeral service will be held at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL at 10:30 AM followed by a celebration of life on June 7th, 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Habitat for Humanity or Salvation Army, in honor of Bob's enduring commitment to serving others.

Bob's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him, a testament to a life well-lived and a legacy of love that will transcend generations. May he rest in eternal peace.
