Pilot, parachutist, outdoorsman, and entrepreneur Robert (Bob) Allan Placek, formerly of Roswell, GA, peacefully passed away on August 26, 2018 with family by his side at his residence in Edgewater, Florida. He was born on July 15,1938 in Racine, Wisconsin. He was preceded by his mother, Olive Mary LaCanne and father, Harold Anton Placek. He was a graduate of the University of Florida where he started the parachute club by landing in The Swamp. As a NASA contractor, he designed and developed communication equipment that received satellite signals for the Apollo moon missions. He later worked at Scientific Atlanta where he designed and developed satellite communications systems for the European market. In the late 70's, Bob and Heinz Wegener started and founded Wegener Communications, Inc, a leader in satellite audio communication equipment that included the satellite stereo equipment for the first broadcast of MTV in the early 80's. He enjoyed numerous trips traveling with family and friends. His passion was fly fishing in the rivers of Montana and the Northwest and he had a great love for classic rock and roll.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Susan Eaton Placek and seven children, Rob, Mike (Pam), Scott, Robyn, Matt (Rachel), Garry (Laura), and Jonathan (Liz), along with fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
There will be a celebration of his life on September 8, 2018 at 1 PM at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 485 Turnbull Bay Road, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, 32168. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christian Children's Fund International or Florida Hospital New Smyrna Hospice.
