With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Robert "Vern" Wathen, who departed this world peacefully on May 18, 2026, at NCH North Naples Hospital in Naples, Florida. Born on September 3, 1944, in the close-knit community of Newport, Maryland, Vern was a beacon of joy and kindness throughout his life.

Vern was the beloved son of the late Joseph and Martha Gertrude Wathen, and was predeceased by his cherished siblings, Gertrude Murphy, Marie Wathen Murphy, Joseph Wathen Jr, and Jerry Wathen. 

His departure leaves behind a loving family who will forever treasure his memory: his devoted wife, Cheryl Ann Feeney Wathen; Timmy Wathen his son; his daughters, Stacy Wathen and Shelly Duelly; six adoring grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews who brought him endless joy.

Vern's journey began in Newport, Maryland, where he was raised in a home filled with love and laughter. He graduated from high school, laying the foundation for a life of dedication and hard work. As a skilled carpenter, Vern built a career at Andrews Airforce Base in Clinton, Maryland, where he was admired for his craftsmanship and integrity.

Beyond his professional achievements, Vern was a man of many talents and passions. He was a gifted drummer and lead singer for a band, captivating audiences with his musical prowess. His love for music extended into his later years as he became known as DJ Vern, a vibrant presence at birthday parties and charitable events. Vern's generosity knew no bounds, as he frequently donated his time and energy to raising funds for children's causes and spreading holiday cheer as a beloved Santa Claus in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

Vern's zest for life was infectious. He had a remarkable ability to make everyone around him feel good, sharing his great sense of humor and warmth with all who crossed his path. Known for his love of dancing and teaching line-dancing, Vern found joy in bringing people together, creating moments of happiness and unity.

To his family and friends, Vern was a pillar of strength, compassion, and unwavering support. His presence will be deeply missed, yet his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift those who knew him. In the words of his family, "Vern lived a good life, RIP," a testament to the impact he made and the love he shared.

As we celebrate Vern's remarkable life, we hold him close in our hearts, carrying forward his legacy of kindness, laughter, and love. May his soul rest in eternal peace, forever drumming to the beat of a life well-lived.

A Mass of Catholic Burial will be held at St Mary, Newport Catholic Church (11555 St Marys Church Rd, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622) at 10:00am on Monday June 15, 2026 with a graveside to follow.
