Rolland W. "Yogi" Barrer, 78, Edgewater, FL passed from this world to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 3,2013 surrounded by his family. Born in Chicago, IL Yogi came to New Smyrna in 1974 and traveled many places serving our nation for 21 years as a Master SGT in the US Air Force as a Reciprocating/Aircraft Engine Mechanic. He served in such notable details as maintaining Air Force One and said, "he was always proud to be an American .. To serve This Wonderful Country was a privilege and was one of his many best memories of his Life." Following his retirement, as a disabled veteran, from McDill A.F.B. he served another 23 years of "unselfish dedicated service" with New Smyrna Beach City Garage as a Dispatcher, Parts Specialist, ending as the Garage Supervisor, and known to everyone as "YOGI" was also referred to as "security", always checking every door before leaving. Yogi was a member of the Air Force Sergents Association, American Military Society, American Legion Post 17, BPO Elks Lodge, and VFW. As a devoted husband of 59 years to Marilyn, Yogi was her everything, her "HERO", her one and only Love. As a father, he was all about family and values, always there for advise, encouragement, and reminding us to do the right thing. As a family, we have many fond memories of road trips, camping, and cruising including Ft. Wilderness, Disney Resorts, and bringing us on their 50th Anniversary trip to Hawaii. As a Grandfather, he provided love and support and enjoyed telling many stories including how he and his wife first met at the age of 16. His son-in-Iaws remember how protective he was of his daughters, even considering him as a father. As a loyal friend, he enjoyed time at Arnolds with retired buddies and friends including owning a 40ft Yacht together and his family have many memories at the NSB marina. He was a GATOR and Chicago Cubs sports fan, a collector of Air Force memorabilia, various coins, and the history of American wars and enjoyed watching old western movies. He was a genourous man supporting so many charities and "No One Does More For Veterans" including Vietnam Veterans/Law Enforcement MF, Paralyzed/Disabled Veterans of America, USO, Children Cancer Society, Easter Seals, ASPCA, Nat'l Fed. of Blind, to name a few. Yogi, you wore so many different hats: veteran, husband, dad, grandpa, friend, co-worker, Dr. Perrys' patient, and always had a positive effect on the people he knew and met. He will be profoundly missed and in our memories forever and leaves his wife Marilyn, daughters and son-in-Iaws; Lori and (Phil) Pruitt, Dianne and (Jeff) Chick, Terri and (Jay) Cardell, Kathy and (Sean) Camerden, sister Dolores and (Mel) Brown, sister-in-law Kathleen Brown, eight grandchildren; Jennifer and (Ben) Manning, Nicole and (Vince) Mull, Philip and (Missy) Pruitt, RJ Cardell, Megan and (Nick) Maresca, Travis Camerden, Michael Cardell, and Tyler Chick, seven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
