Russell Carl Grunsten of Titusville, FL and formerly of Fairhope, AL and Gretna, LA, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on September 25, 2022, at Halifax Hospice in Orange City, FL. Russell was born in Berlin, MD on March 6, 1929, and graduated from Green Cove Springs High School in Florida. He attended George Washington University and graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1953. After serving in the US Army as a captain in the medical corps, he settled in New Orleans, LA. He became a partner in orthopedic medicine and was affiliated with Touro Infirmary and Tulane University, where he served as a lecturer in orthopedics. Russell traveled to Dominican Republic and to Honduras to teach and help promote orthopedic medicine. He established the first and only orthopedic training program in Honduras.
He is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Marian Ellerbe Grunsten, his parents, Charles and Anna Grunsten, his children, Eric Scott Grunsten and Kimberly Grunsten, his brother Chester M. Grunsten and his sisters Frances G. Simmons and Doris G. Wingate. He is survived by a granddaughter, Stephanie Grunsten, nephews Clifford Dypsky (Sarah), Bruce Grunsten (Olga), Richard Wingate (Susan), Todd Grunsten, and niece Sharyn Wingate and her partner, Ruth LaJoie, as well as great nieces and nephews. In addition, he was fortunate to have good neighbors and friends at Harbor Point Condominiums. Many thanks to his guardian angel, Jeannette Ahmie, and to Allan Howland and Candace Crawford for their tireless efforts helping Russell with many things. The family is grateful for all who have helped care for Russell. Special thanks to the medical staff at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville, and Jennifer Brewer and staff at Benton House in Port Orange, where he resided briefly, and to the hospice nurses and doctors at Halifax Hospice.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 19 at 1pm at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home in New Smyrna Beach, FL. Friends are invited to attend. Contributions in his memory can be made to Chestnut Mountain Ranch, 244 Ponderosa Ponds Rd., Morgantown, WV 26508.
