Sammie Stilley Rex, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, at the age of 94.
Sammie lived a remarkable life marked by love, service, and adventure. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Charles W. Rex, Jr., with whom she shared a devoted marriage and raised a loving family.
A gifted athlete and true pioneer, Sammie was a National Champion Water Skier, performed with the renowned Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team, and is remembered as the first woman to shoe ski, reflecting the courage and determination that defined her life. She also devoted countless hours to serving others as a Pink Lady volunteer at Orange Memorial Hospital, where her kindness and compassion touched many lives.
Sammie loved traveling, boating, visiting the Bahamas, and spending part of each year in the mountains of North Carolina, where she created treasured memories with family and friends. She was a faithful member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church and a proud 74-year member of the Rosalind Club, where she formed many lasting friendships.
Above all, Sammie cherished her family. She is survived by her children:
She was the proud grandmother of 14 grandchildren and great-grandmother of 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy.
Sammie will be remembered for her strength, grace, adventurous spirit, and unwavering devotion to family and friends. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched and the generations she loved so deeply.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday August 27th at St. Michaels Episcopal Church followed by a reception at the Tap Room at Dubstread.
