Samuel
McDowell
Sep 21, 1942 — Oct 5, 2026
“Sudden Sam” was born in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1942. He died on October 5, 2026, at the age of 84. He attended Central Catholic High School and signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1960. Sam was a six-time All-Star with the Cleveland Indians and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2006. He spent 15 seasons in the Major Leagues. Although his most notable years were with Cleveland, he also played for the Giants, Yankees, and Pirates. He was one of baseball’s most overpowering left-handed pitchers. He led the American League in strikeouts five times and was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1966. Throughout his career, Sam battled alcoholism, and his career was cut short at the age of 35. After overcoming his own struggles with alcoholism and addiction, Sam devoted his life to helping others. He earned degrees in sports psychology and addiction from the University of Pittsburgh and became a counselor. He served as the mental health and addiction recovery consultant for Major League Baseball’s Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.) from 1986 to 2016. In 2017, he joined the B.A.T. Board of Directors. In 2022, Sam received B.A.T.’s Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his extraordinary dedication to helping members of the baseball family. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 25 years, Eva McDowell. He was previously married to Carol (Rich) Paton, with whom he shared two children, Debbie Liebling (Greg) and Tim McDowell (Karen). He was a loving grandfather to Joseph Liebling (Landra) and Samuel McDowell, and a proud great-grandfather to Jane Liebling. He is also survived by his brother, Tom McDowell, and his wife, Peg; his sister, Margaret Francis, and her late husband, Bill; and his sister-in-law, Jan McDowell, widow of his late brother, Bill McDowell. He was preceded in death by his siblings Warren and George (Linda). He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, as well as friends and fans from all over the world. The fastball may be gone, but the memories, the laughter, the stories, and the lives you touched will live on forever. We love you, Sudden Sam, and miss you already.
