In Loving Memory of Shirley Jane Bliss

May 4, 1934 – July 30, 2025

With deep love and gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Shirley Jane Bliss, who passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, at the age of 91.

Shirley was born on May 4, 1934, in Ogdensburg, New York, to Arthur and Evelyn Hammonds. She grew up in upstate New York, where her lifelong love of learning began. She earned her undergraduate degree from the State University of New York and later completed her master's degree at Hood College in Frederick, MD.

Early in her career, Shirley taught elementary school before devoting herself to raising her two daughters, Susan and Sandra, who survive her. In later years, she continued her professional journey working with Nutrisystem and Montgomery College, where she was known for her great attitude, work ethic and impact on the students she served.

Shirley had a special talent and passion for sewing—so much so that her loved ones fondly recall always finding pins tucked here and there, a quiet reminder of her creativity and care. A breast cancer survivor, she faced life's challenges with quiet strength and unshakable grace.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Judy, Bob, and Larry; and her son-in-law, Mark Karis.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Susan Bliss and Sandra Karis; her cherished grandchildren, Mandy Proctor, Samantha (Shawn) Johnston, Nick (Tabatha) Karis, and Katelyn (Michael) Tincher; and her adored great-grandchildren, Mekhai, Kayla, Kingston, Madeline, Alex, Matthew, Mark, Lindsey, and Henry.

Shirley's legacy is one of resilience, kindness, and creativity. Her life touched many, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

A private celebration of her life will be held by the family.
