Obituary

Shirley L. Price, 84, passed away at her home in Groveland, FL from lung cancer complications with her devoted husband of 57 years, Howard ("Sonny") Price, by her side. Born on July 9, 1939, near Westminster, MD, she was the daughter of the late David Samuel Bare and Louise Wagner Bare. She was a student of Carroll County public schools, graduating from New Windsor High School in 1957, where she was an honor roll student. Upon graduating, she worked as a secretary to Dean Samuel B. Schofield at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) until her marriage to Sonny on April 24, 1966, in Baker Memorial Chapel. While at Western Maryland College, she also worked as one of the "ladies of Lewis Hall," performing contract work for a federal government agency tasked with creating a national continuity plan during the Cold War.

Following her marriage to Sonny, the Prices relocated to Durham, NC and Shirley worked in the administrative offices of Duke University. After several years in Durham, Sonny's work transferred them to Birmingham, AL and Shirley was employed in the administrative offices of Rust Engineering. On September 6, 1969, their son, Gregory S. Price was born, and Shirley began a happy period as a stay-at-home mother to Greg. Subsequent transfers saw them living in Frederick, MD, Poland, OH, Brunswick, OH, Bel Air, MD, and Hanover, PA. In 1995, the Prices relocated to Central FL and Shirley worked as a sales associate for Dillard's Department Stores in their Sanford store, achieving the President's Award for sales on numerous occasions.

She was a former member of Emmanuel (Baust) United Church of Christ in Taneytown, MD, and the Brunswick United Methodist Church in Brunswick, OH. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Living Hope Church of Clermont, FL (formerly the First United Methodist Church of Clermont).

While residing in Altamonte Springs, FL, she was a member of and served as President of the Kiwanis Club of Altamonte Springs.

Wherever she lived, Shirley made friends easily, engaged in community interests and church activities, and was active in Greg's school and sports activities. She enjoyed taking cruises, cooking and baking, interior decoration, and in her younger years, playing golf. For many years, she and Sonny made annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach, SC with a special group of family and friends.

In addition, Shirley loved arts and crafts. During their time in Hanover, PA, she opened and managed an arts and crafts center in New Oxford, PA. While a member of Brunswick United Methodist Church, she chaired their annual arts and crafts bazaar for many years. As a resident at the Woodlands at Church Lake in Groveland, FL, she enjoyed attending numerous events at their clubhouse, her favorites being karaoke and the soup and salad luncheons. Always special to her was spending time with her family and friends on annual trips back to Maryland and enjoying Maryland seafood.

In 2005, Shirley experienced her first diagnosis of breast cancer, followed by a recurrence in 2017. In 2020, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Her cancer diagnosis led to her serving as co-chairperson of the Greater Clermont Cancer Foundation's annual tea and luncheon. She was always willing to speak with other patients receiving a diagnosis of cancer. While battling the disease for years, she rarely complained, always managed to have a smile for everyone and maintained her positive attitude throughout, so much so, that upon her discharge from a rehabilitation center in April of this year, Shirley left the rehab sporting a red jacket, black slacks, and a black-and-white checked Bear Bryant style hat in tribute to the legendary football coach of the University of Alabama, the alma mater of her son Greg. Saturdays during college football season, often found the Prices watching the Crimson Tide vanquish yet another opponent (Roll Tide!).

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her beloved son Greg and his wife Jill C. Price of Columbus, OH, sisters Jean B. LeGore (husband Conrad W. "Lee" LeGore), Barbara A. Bankard (husband Robert E. Bankard) and J. Rebecca Bare (significant other Glenn S. Bair), all of Westminster, MD, sister Virginia Faye Frock of Littlestown, PA, and brothers Allen L. Bare (wife Barbara S. Bare) of Westminster, and Jeffery N. Bare of Keysville, MD. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by brother Carl D. Bare, brother-in-law Kenneth T. Frock, Sr., father- and mothers-in-law V. Howard Price and Rita Clemson Price and Louise Bollinger Price, and sister-in-law Patsy L. Boone and husband Milton Russell "Jack" Boone.

A celebration of life service will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to: Living Hope Church of Clermont , 950 7th Street, Clermont, FL 34711 or Greater Clermont Cancer Foundation , P.O. Box 443, Minneola, FL 34755
