Obituary

Shubh L. Sethi, 78, of Fort Myers, FL passed away on October 6th, 2026 surrounded by his family. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, and uncle, a lifelong businessman, and a dedicated spreader of joy and laughter.

Shubh was born January 22nd, 1948 in the city of Ferozepur in Punjab, India, the youngest of 10 siblings. At 19, he came to the US to study microbiology at University of Illinois at Chicago. Following his desire to join the business world, he took a job selling correspondence courses door to door through which he met Joan, his future wife of 52 years, procuring from her both a sale and a date. His skill at sales and interest in biomed led to a successful career at Baxter, then to the cancer research firm Oncotech, and ultimately to President and CEO of the biotech and pharma data analysis firm MetaWorks. His career took him from Illinois to California, where he got his MBA from Pepperdine, to many years in Massachusetts before he moved down to sunny Florida.

Never quite ready to retire, he occupied his mind in his later years as an Enrolled Agent representing clients to the IRS, and as a certified financial advisor.

He loved to travel and meet new people, but what he treasured most of all was spending time with his family, especially if it involved competition of some kind. He spent countless hours playing card games with family and friends, always attempting what we'll call creative reinterpretation of the rules. He slept through five times more movies than he ever saw. He had an impish nature and an infectious smile. He relished any chance to stir the pot, and he was deeply generous and loving to those dearest to him. He will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents Kishan and Kaushalya Sethi, his brothers Amrit (Raj), Kishore (Kailash), Sarve (Nidhi), Surinder (Taruna), and his sisters Shakuntla Monga (Gopal), Yog Madan (Prithvi), Sneh Gakkhar (Satya).

He is survived by his loving wife Joan Sethi, son Mark Hussain, daughter in law Maryam Hussain, brother Sushil Sethi and sister in law Florence Sethi, sister Shubh Lata Chawla, and Naresh Sethi, who is technically his nephew, though they were born in the same year and grew up together like brothers. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and their cherished children.

The family invites all who knew him to join in celebrating his life. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 13th from 6-8pm at Yurs Funeral Home in St. Charles, Illinois. Services will be held the following morning at 11am on Saturday, November 14th at the Congregational United Church of Christ in St. Charles, Illinois with luncheon to follow.

We knew we were in the final chapters of Shubh's life, but covid took him from us swiftly and unexpectedly. In some of his last conversations, Shubh shared his surprise at learning how much harm covid can do and how prevalent it still is, and shared that he wished he'd really understood that before experiencing it firsthand.
