Obituary

Sonia Folsom, 88, Beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Teacher

Sonia Folsom, a devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and lifelong educator, passed away on August 3, 2025, at the age of 88.

Born in Añasco, Puerto Rico in 1936, Sonia grew up in Astoria, Queens, as the eldest of four sisters. She earned her undergraduate degree from Hunter College and later completed a master's degree in education from Penn State University. She went on to teach Spanish in both full-time and substitute roles, sharing her language and culture with generations of students.

Sonia was twice married, first to her husband Dennis Cimino, and after his death to her second husband Douglas Folsom. She found strength and purpose in her family, her faith, and her creative pursuits.

An accomplished quilter, Sonia discovered her passion for quilting in the 1970s and spent the decades that followed sewing with joy, winning multiple awards and generously sharing her skills with others. She was equally known for her talents in the kitchen – especially her holiday baking. Her family eagerly anticipated the assortment of Christmas cookies she lovingly prepared each year.

Sonia is survived by her sons, James Cimino and Robert Cimino; her beloved grandchildren, Carter and Tyler Cimino; and her three sisters: Zaida Rogers, Zoraida Schertl, and Sally Weston. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss her warmth, generosity, and sense of humor.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Sonia's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
